Ok.....this is very late.....and its going to be short and to the point....pretty much as our trip was!!! As usual, KTP didn't let us down....even for a blitz 4 day trip. The itinery....
- Urikaruus 2 nights
- Grootkolk 1 night
- Kieliekrankie 1 night

This is not going to be a day-by-day report...but rather a collection of stories from our trip...

For a start.....

Lions behaving badly - Part 1

So early on our second morning, we leave Urikaruus and decide to head south for a change......it starts spitting....wind-screen wipers blurring the screen......up ahead in the road......

Image

...and then he catches up with his brother....

Image

...and then they catch up with the rest of the family....

Image

Image

.....but one little muskateer decided that daddy needed to spend some quality time with him....

Image

Come-on dad!!!!!

Image

But dad decided otherwise.....with consequences....

Image

Image

Image

Mom to the rescue.....

Image

Anyway.....dad got a good snivveling at from mom....then tail between the legs he went and collapsed under a tree.....in good old lion style!

The youngsters.....well.....they just gave Kalagadi Guru more maintenance to do......sorry Jannie!!!

Image

To be cont....

Lions being naughty part 2

So you would have thought the rough handling from daddy 1 would have taken the wind out of the cubs sails......well not so

After daddy 1 collapsed under the tree, the cubs went after daddy 2.....who was still near the waterhole.....

Little guy......I really wouldn't do that.....

Image

.....I really don't think that is a good idea.....

Image

Anyway.....nothing happened this time.....the cub didn't manage to trip up daddy 2 and peace returned to the Auob valley....

Image

And the no-entry sign :hmz: :hmz: :hmz: :hmz:

Well.....we were soon to find out.........PARENTAL GUIDANCE WARNING!!!

And later....Mr Handsome tried his luck again.....and got a fist full again....

Image

We sat in thre midday Feb sun for almost 3 hours.....we were fairly toasted!!! And ?Mr Handsome was having a good old puff!!! We eventually left them to their business....and headed down to Kielikrankie.....

Thanks for all the superb comments!!!!

Things in/under trees

So I have always wanted to see a cobra raiding a weavers nest......seen weavers nests.......seen cobras.....but not in the same place.......so we were moving along the Auob river road.......weavers nest.........    ......STOP!!!

Image

Image

We watched them - yip there were 2 cruising around the nest....but lucky for the weavers they werent lucky with any lunch.

Later that day, we came across something else under a tree.....

Image

It was a bit far away.....so after some cropping.....

Image

And there sitting in the shade watching her - The Mills

Image

She looked like she was quite full....and flopped down in the shade. We continued up to Urikaruus and unpacked. Later we came back and found the cheetah gone......and the Mills busy weighing the left over springbok for their research.

And the rain?

One thing that was fantastic to see was how green the veld was.....the above average rainfall had certainly had its effects.....

Union's End waterhole....

Image

Image

Image

Kang waterhole...

Image

While we were at Urikaruus, the thunderclouds built up, circled around us......with spit and a spot falling at Urikaruus. As always, the electric show was great, but really difficult to capture on camera!!!

Image

....but it left its fair share of water in the roads....

Thanks for the great comments!!

The Big and the Small

So moving back to the 4 legged inhibitants of KTP.....

Near Urikaruus......

Image

....the furtherest north on the Auob side that we have seen Meerkats - unfortunately quite far away!

And of course the giraffes drinking from the old Urikaruus waterhole...

Image

And of course, the local Urikaruus battie family....

Image

We also came across this tortoise.....but it didn't look like a leopard tortoise..... :hmz: ...is this a kalahari tented tortoise??

Image

Near Unions End.....this spottie walked up to the car to check us out.....and then disappeared over a rise.....

Image

And then this little guy was getting hot feet near the mating lions - we found him quite entertaining while waiting for the action to erupt between the lions!!

Image

Near Dikbaardskolk....someone had left their meal behind....

Image

And of course, we had to check on the hyena den north of Urikaruus.....

Image

....and the little guy was up to normal hyena pup tricks.....

Image

Sorry for the stops and starts in this travel tail!!!

Feathers and Trucks

A couple of the birds we were lucky enough to get close to.....

Kalahari mossie.....

Image

Sheltering in the shade....

Image

...and next to the water....

Image

And a tawny on the lookout.....

Image

And then on the opper dune road, a gentleman flagged us down to tell us to take it very slow over the last rise in the road by Dikbaardskolk :hmz: :hmz: :hmz: :hmz: .....????

Then we saw why.....

Image

Oh dear.....the petrol guy had got stuck in the wet soft sand on the uphill. We had a chat to the guy - he had been stuck there for 4 hours already.....but there wasn't much we could do.....he had water with him and we promised to let the guys at Nossob know......which we did. The plan was evidently to get the front-loader/tractor there to give him a pull. The next day he was gone - so their plan did the trick!!!
