This sighting took 30 minutes and I am posting it as one installment so continuity is not lost. It is the first time we are seeing something like this and it still excites me seeing these pix

We found a Tawny Eagle at the edge of the dam and it slowly ventured into the dam :hmz:

First the look

Image

Followed by the war cries

Image

Image

Then the dip

Image

And finally the skiing

He then dried himself and took off

What a wonderful sighting, thank you Tawny

OK score is 2 for Duke and 2 for the Princess but since I want to raise money for anti-poaching I am taking this opportunity to first post our two good rhino sightings for this trip without giving dates, time and location.

A mother and calf and there were two other adults with them

Image

Image

Image

and this long horned rhino  which was one in a group of six

Image

Image

Coming up next, Duke :hmz: or is it the Princess

Katja, yeah hope  the poachers do not get any more of our rhinos and he grows up to old age
Flutterby, both would be very nice :D
Cheetah211 glad :D you getting your fix. I would say it is a genetic thing
Micetta, splendid horn
Lionspoon, both :hmz: :D
Flying cheetah, I reckon that is the longest rhino horn we have seen
Pumbaa, thank you and now…..
Mauxie and Shi, great to have you with us and thank you. Mpondo is a very quiet place and can provide some very pleasant surprises.

On the way back from Mpondo we found a greater kestrel

For our afternoon drive we headed north on the H10 and took the S29 back to LS.

On the S29 just passed the S122 turn off Sharifa said Duke

Yes I replied

No, the real Duke,

:hmz: Now I am not real but I drive all right

Duke, the magnificent tusker in honour of whom I take my forum name.

We had only one previous sighting of Duke and he had one tusk at the time (our avatar pic).

Today he was very close and what a special sighting

Image

Image

even a "smile" for us :D :D :D

We met Click Click on the road back to LS and told her about Duke.

Next episode is titled “snakes and ladders”

Duke meeting the other Duke!
How special to see him so close up.

I am thinking your Kestrel is a Juv Dark Chanting Goshawk?
Stunning pics all of them.

Lovely rhino and babe pix! And what a special sighting of Duke!
I tend to agree with Elsa - think your kestrel is actually a juvie DCG. Great pix all round! Thanx S & D!

28 April 2011.

We were first out again and headed on the S29. At the intersection with the S122 we saw three honey badgers   but they scattered of in differernt directions. We stopped and the little one came running towards us. Sharifa's camera settings had changed accidently but she did get some pics

Image

Image

We continued on the S122 and at the intersection with the H10, Miss Sharifa said leopard

This sleepy Prince in a tree

Thank you all for the comments

The leopard was very relaxed and we had spend about 40 minutes with it - we were two cars. Just to make sure we did not get bored  a gymnogene  turned up in the tree next to the one with the leopard.

Image

Image

As more cars arrived the leopard thought it is getting too crowded

We headed south on the old Tshokwane road and saw a puffie.

Image

I slowed down but the snake was not moving :hmz:

As I got close to it I could see that a chunk of its neck was missing :hmz:

Image

We took the Salitje Road and saw a young python on the road. He was alive :D

Image

Image

Now Mis Sharifa was not happy with the leopard score at one each so she says "leopard"

and sure enough a leopard was crossing the road behind us - Sharifa managed a pic of it disappearing in the bush

Image

We got to the high level bridge and headed back to LS. Close to LS we found this fish eagle having lunch

If you followed our TR from December (Driving Miss Sharifa.....) you will know we saw this Giant Kingfisher on the low level bridge (H10) and he was full of tricks. Sadly :( he was not to be found on this trip but we did find some other trciksters :D in the area.

Like this yellow billed hornbill trying to down a nestling. We were with him for about 10 minutes and he just was not getting anywhere. This car comes along with total disregard :wall: :sniper: of what is happening and merrily drives on and that was the end of that. Would have liked to see whether it managed to gulp it down ala our GKF.

More tricksters coming up next

Thank You Micetta, Katja, BB30, Pikkie, cheetah2111, Bushmom

We also found this monitor lizard that seemed to be "flashing" for want of a better expression.

The two biologists we spoke to think it is some sort of display behaviour to attract a female

Image

Image

Image

and there was the red billed hornbill trying to outdo his yellow billed cousin

Image

Image

Image

and this immature fish eagle tucking into his meal

Image

Image

and this baboon just reminding us that littering is not good, not good to look at and not good for the baboons

29 April 2011

Today was a day for lions.

We took the H29 and S122 and it was quiet. when we got to the H10, same place where we had seen the LIT the day before, there was a lion and lioness feeding on something - but they were shy

Image

Image

Image

Heading south on the H10 we met Anja Barnaard

and saw two more lions

Image

Image

Image

and also a Martial Eagle :D

Image

On the afternoon drive we went to the Duke waterhole where we got a very pleasant surprise  :D :D

Lower Sabie is one of our favourite camps. The game viewing is excellent and we always try to get a safari tent with a river view.

You can just sit on the deck and enjoy the view and catch what ever comes down to the river for a drink. We had giraffe

Image

and this herd of ellie very close to the fence

Image

with this small guy.

Image

Also a black collared barbet

Image

a sombre greenbull

Image

brown hooded kingfisher

Image

Heuglin's robin (don't have my book with me but new name is white browed robin chat I think???)

Thank You Katja

The other thing about Lower Sabie is you can go sit at Sunset Dam to see what unfolds.

There was a black headed heron minding his own business

Image

Along comes a yellow billed stock

Image

and struts his stuff

Image

Image

Image

and ruffled the heron's feathers

Image

Image

Image

but the heron wins the day

We saw many Rollers around Lower Sabie. I am back in sunny South Africa :D  (although it was a lot warmer in Washington and London  ).

It is time for some Rock and Rollers
