padlopertjie My visit to Rooiputs in December 2010

Unread postby padlopertjie » Wed Feb 16, 2011 6:08 pm

Sorry it took me so long to give feedback on my trip to the Kgalagadi. The trip was a very fruitfull one. We saw on each of our 5 day stay, Lions and cheethas.

One morning about 5 past 6 a big lion male walked through our camp, that was an awesome feeling to be so near to this beast.
On the 3rd and 4th day of our stay we encountered two big storms, our camp was ripped to pieces.

The highlight of our stay was one morning, about 8 km north of Rooiputs, a leopard was lying in the middle of the road. At first I thought it was a hyena but to our surprise it was this beautifull leopard.

Our next trip to Rooiputs is later this year in September for 7 days.
In May my wife and I will visit the KNP for 10 days. 5 days in Maroela and 5 days in Balule.
If someone can tell me how to upload pictures, I will post a few.

Karoo groete.

Dreamer, it was not necessary for us to move camp, because according to Rudi who has been staying in a tent at the Rooiputs camping sites for more than a year now, it is common for the lions to move through Rooiputs camping sites.
You must be alert all the time, so when the lions decide to walk into the camp you must make way for them, but again, it was an awesome feeling that morning when Umfaan (male lion) roared and walk through campsite # 5.

In June 2010 when we were camping at Kaa, the lions woke us one night as they walked into our camp and roared for about 15 min. It was pitch dark and we could not see them. The people at campsite #1, next to us, packed the next morning but we stayed for an extra 2 days. The next morning the whole camping area was full of lion spoor some of them not more than 2 meters from our tents.
Rule #1 is to be alert at all times when you are in unfenced campsites.
