DAY 3 – 26/9/2010 ( PART 3)

We decided to go to Unions End and then to Gharagab. The wind was picking up and the day was not so nice anymore.

It seems to be the day for Bateleurs……………. Another one at a waterhole enjoying the cool water.

Image

Image

Then we arrived at Unions End. Stunning place to be. (but strange to think that on the other side of the fence a herd of sheep might wander pass)

On our way to Gharagab we did not see much animal life. One herd of Gemsbok with this one whose horn tried to look like a kudu horn…….

Image

For any one who loves scenery, the Gharagab road is a must. It is so nice when you reach the top of the dune and there is a new scene in front of you. Sometimes grass, then acacias, then thorn bushes.

Image

Image

We arrived at Gharagab and got to our chalet. By now the wind was blowing like a storm. According to the attendant there was a lion the morning in the camp, but has moved on. We kept an eye on the water hole but nothing was even a little bit interested in having a drink of water. We went to bed sulking for not seeing anything…………..

DAY 4 – 27/9/2010 ( PART 1)

Just passed three we wake up to a roarrrrrrrrrrrrr. We grab the spotlight and run to the door. It is freezing cold for September and the wind is blowing like mad. Nothing at the water hole.

Every half hour there is a roarrrrrrrrrrrrr. There is definitely two lions. Every time we run out to have a look. Nothing………..

Just past 6 we start to pack the bakkie. We don’t want to be caught in camp with a lion and we can’t leave………..

According to the camp attendant he can’t see the lions from the look out, but he also can hear them. We say our goodbyes and leave camp……

Not far from camp ( we could still see the look out tower) we find mister lion in the road. He’s still asleep and by the looks of it had a late dinner……..

He keeps on calling his friend from the previous night.

Image

No call from the friend, but he keeps calling and looking around.

Image

Image

Then he sees something. We look back and there is some one on the look out tower.

Image

Just after that he gets up and starts walking to the camp. Well they will definitely have another lion in camp today………..

We drive on back to Nossob. This is a place that will definitely see us again. The peace and quiet is something to smooth the soul.

Just before Lijersdraai we saw something move. We could not see very clearly what it was only after the turn in the road did we realize it was a pack of Hyennas. We could count 12 in total. One looked very pregnant.

They were eating something but not even on full zoom could we see more.

Image

Image

It was a very quiet morning further. I love these “troupandjies” Must say in Afrikaans it just sounds prettier than Roller!

At Nossob there also was a casualty the previous evening.

Image

Another birdie. Not a LBJ, but a little black and white one. I know in Afrikaans it’s a Fiskaal, but can’t remember the English.

Image

On our way back we saw this “nice” wirl wind and his dust cloud.

Then my favorite….. doves drinking water.

That is the end of our first trip. It might not have been full of stunning lion sightings, but this was our, relax and recharge trip. Full of sightings to remind us why we love the Kgalagadi.

Up next trip 2. The trip with our very first kill…………..

TRIP 2 DAY 1 – 23/10/2010 (PART 1)

This trip was one of those totally unplanned ones. I met the Thursday with P@m and her SO for a quick coffee before they left for their KTP trip. Just there I decided we should go for the weekend………. I made reservations for the Friday and the Saturday nights.

We stayed in TR and P@m in Urikarius, but I was sure we would meet some where………. Little did I known.

This was am early morning cloud scene.

At Auchterlonie these two were sitting in the sun and it looked like they have not made up their mind about getting up!

Image

We took the lower dune road and then we would take the upper one back to the Aub river and then back to TR.

Sightings were slow and we stopped and took some sand pics. I grew up in Upington and played in these red sands as child. It still amazes me on how stunning the wind patterns look.

Image

This bird sat still enough for a photo.

Image

This Gemsbok did not want to pose, but she had such a stunning set of horns, I just had to take a photo.

When we turned of into the river bed a women stopped next to us. She asked if we saw the cheetahs. We looked very confused as we have not seen a single predator the morning not even a jackal.

Then she said sorry it seems as if you don’t know about the cheetahs. According to her an odd 5 kilos down the road there were 3 cheetahs right next to the road under a tree and there was a white car with them.

When we drove up I saw it was P@m. I was over the moon. We stopped next to them for a chat while we kept the cheetahs in the eye. They where very relaxed (the cheetahs not Pam, well she to but a bit excited) and it did not seem as if the were in a hurry any where.

Pam was convinced they would hunt today and said we must stay with the cheetahs.

Mom and one of the children.

Image

Image

Making sure all directions were covered.

Image

The other one, that was behind the tree stump, got up and walked round to her sister.

Image

This one showed us a nice Colgate smile (the end of a yawn.)

Image

Image

As there were more cars stopping at the sighting Mom got restless.

Image

To be continued………………

Oh wow wow wow Lion queen..i have just spent a good half hour or so catching up. My word but you have had some awesome sightings....
Thanks for reminding about Gharagab...I just love that camp as well !
Re the Fiscal..
The old name : Fiscal Shrike
New name ( just to confuse us more) Common Fiscal.
It is also often referred to as the Butcher Bird because it often impales it's prey on thorns or barbed wire fencing to be eaten later. That bird really had me confused in the beginning though because the Common Fiscals in KTP have a white eyebrows....ours down here in the Cape do not
Looking forward to more of this trip report !!!!

You are so darn lucky to live in Upington....

Lionspoon,

We saw her and the girls again in December and then I got the idea she was going to leave them on their own soon.

TRIP 2 DAY 1 – 23/10/2010 (PART 2)

We just could not get enough of these 3 stunning cheetahs.

A family photo

Image

By now it was already very hot and I had a headache straight from hell. When the cheetahs got up and started to move Picnic decided to move to the nearest shade to get me out of the sun.

Image

Lucky for me the next shade was next to the waterhole…….

Image

They were very alert and never relaxed while they were drinking.

They then started walking down the riverbed.

Image

We once again moved on to the next shade and kept an eye on the cheetahs in the rearview mirrors. At a stage I could not see them any more and the cars have not reached us…………

Now I was a bit sad and upset. Did they go for another nap?????

We were looking every where. Then I saw something to the left up on the ridge. Can’t believe how good they blend in.

Image

There was a herd of Springbuck down in the river. Mom made a move but the Springbuck saw her and they went of in a cloud of dust……
