At this moment it is 0 days, 16 hours, 48 minutes and 43 seconds until Friday, 10 December 2010, 15:00:00 (Amsterdam time). Not a very significant moment for the reader, but for Guinea Pig and me it is one.
It is the moment our plane is scheduled to take off at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
We'll be heading for Cairo, Egypt (hence the mummies in the title) from a possibly snowy Holland. After a 3 hour stopover in the country of the pyramids we'll continue on to O. R. Tambo, where I'll be buying sandals. ;)

Our schedule:
Arrival at ORT, and on to the inlaws near Vereeniging, where we sill spend the weekend. And after that!
Monday wake up at 1 AM or such, and head for Kruger. 8)
The plan is to enter at Crocodile Bridge, not the more logical Malelane, as we have never entered there.
Then up the S28 to look for Duke, doggies, cheetah, and well... Anything! Depending on quite a few things, mostly our instinct, time at sightings, hearsay and feelings we'll choose a route to camp number one: Satara.
There we'll be staying for 2 nights, followed by two in Olifants, 2 in Shingwedzi, and three in Punda. (And two in Phalaborwa.)

Now most of you know that we do like a bit of photography, and I know that people like to see trip photos, so this is our little goodies bag:
Image
Not in the photos are the two phones... And during the time in Kruger we plan to update you with them. And if we manage we'll be posting photos made with those. So if the first photos do not look quite fantastic, know that the really good ones will be coming! Much, much later though, we will need to go through all the photos, and there are going to be many!

So look for updates via the dotmobi site here, and pray for reception at the camps we are at!

And here we are. 8)

We landed safely this morning at 7:49 after a flight that took way too long. There were a lot of South Africans on the flight from Cairo. Most were expats coming home for Christmas and a group of students just returning from The Netherlands. You can all imagine how festive the atmosphere on the plane was. :D

We're in Vanderbijlpark unwinding, getting used to the heat! That was quite a shock after the icy weather we left behind.

We'll be leaving for KNP very very early Monday morning.

Merry Christmas all!

I'm now at the inlaws, and have a computer and something that looks like Internet, so may be giving you a nice little present: some photos!
They will be quick & dirty grabs using Irfanview, using a monitor that is not calibrated, so will not be optimal, but... Guess it's better than nothing?

Uploading some more photos, which doesn't exactly work easy on this connection. There may be some doubles, forgive me for it. ;)

We were on a mission in a place near here: Piet my vrouw, also known as the redchested cuckoo. You hear it all over the place, and we had been hunting it with Frank at Pafuri picnicspot, to no avail. And now we got it.
The first two photos were making me happy enough, we had seen it, photographed it, and thus ticked it:

Had a bite to eat, and got way better photos:

And as a bonus, we saw this Greyheaded bush-shrike twice as well:

Two hard to photograph birds in a single package! 8)

For those still online: Happy New Year and all the best wishes for next year!

The car is packed for the big adventure. Two very happy tourists eager to get back into KNP again and two very uncertain-are-we-doing-the-right-thing Saffies will be up very early tomorrow morning. The two Saffies have never been anywhere near Kruger so this should be fun. They have NO idea what to expect except for charging ellies!

Okay guys & girls, we are back in Holland, no snow, but plenty of rain and definitely cooler than SA.
Almost didn't make it all the way, the landing at Schiphol was.... Lets say interesting.
The cars on the highway next to the runway actually stopped to see if we would make it!

Bought a brandnew screen for editing the photos, with a calibration spider (for those that want to know, a Dell Ultrasharp U2311H and the Spyder3Elite) so we can start editing the photos tonight. If they look bad on your screen, I just gave you 2 items to buy. ;)

So hang in there, we only have the evenings to work in, but will be uploading photos to a new gallery on one of my sites, and making a real tripreport.

Four hours and nineteen minutes, and then the photos are copied to the external disk at work. So I can access them there too, and have a back-up at a different location.

When did you last (ever?) make a back-up of your photos??????

We have 3 flavours: 8MP, 10MP and 18MP (a 20D, 1DMKIII and a 7D)

I'm sort of lucky as I used the 1D mostly, which means most of the files are 'only' 15MB instead of the 30MB which the 7D produces.
I had brought 2 NextoDI's so I could make a back-up in the field, each loaded with a 500 GB disk, and to be totally safe also brought 2 500 GB disks as spares. You never know you know? Ones of the disks might conk out, or we could simply be using too much space. (The 7D also has the option of making HD movies.)

Okay, for those that really cannot wait, we are working on the photos, and uploading as we go.
At work I cannot do the photos, my computer doesn't have enough brains and memory, so I'll do the writing from there. And will be using the photos we uploaded.

So if you really cannot wait, sneak a peek here. You can rate photos, but you should be unable to comment on them. (That's antispam.)
You can see realtime what we are uploading!

Found two landscapes I have to share with you. They show exactly how beautiful summer in KNP can be. I'm going to have both printed on canvas for the home. 8) Both pics as they were taken, no lightroom magic.

At Shingwedzi on the Kanniedood Dam road:

All the photo's we want to share are up on the site.
Copyrighted me or Duco by DuQues own choice. I didn't make many so rather direct praise at him. :)

Trip Report will be done by DuQues, so give him some time for that. If he makes the horror of horror end of the world let's tear our tummies laughing error to find Red Hartebeest in KNP, my name is kept out of it.

My work is done. 8)
