Post subject: Richprins' Proper TR North Replies by Invitation Only Sep 10
Unread postPosted: Tue Sep 28, 2010 6:52 pm
Hello, beloved forumites!

My big yearly trip has arrived, and I'm off to the Far North of Kruger for 5 days tomorrow!

An action-packed trip...or not!

Two new characters, Destroyer and Gvr!

A must see! :cam:

After consultation with the Mods about the ghastly amount of slanging, drivel and suchlike on my previous Trip Report, and because I am joint Entertainer of the Year for a little while longer, and in an effort to improve the class of repliers to THIS TR, it has been decided as follows:

-Once I am back, I shall PM those forumites who are good people, and request them to give the more civil replies a normal TR deserves!

-Those who trespass, will simply be removed from the TR! :rtm:

-Those who try to be funny while I'm away, will NOT get my PMS! :naughty:

-Obviously, those who behave well in my absence will receive extra credit!

This is a drastic measure, I know, but SOMETHING needs to be done to set a good example for young viewers!

Good luck, and may the Force be with us!

RP, have you decided your route yet?? or just heading up north and that's it!!

A very good question, Andy old friend!

There is only one road up North to Pafuri, so planning to be at Phalaborwa gate at opening time, and moving it along to get to said destination!

Want to have a look at Tihongonyeni too!

Everything packed, can't wait!

Thanks very much!

Anyway, this is going to be a loooong, report, very unusual for me...but the sightings were absolutely fantastic...and even saw two forumites, despite my best efforts...

The Zeiss belonged to Gvr, one of the crew, and hasn't surfaced, I'm afraid!

So, Day 1 of 5, Part 1 of 19:

It was a dark and stormy morning....(not really, but that's ALWAYS a good way to start a story! )

Image

As can be seen, we were travelling in style...the good ship USS Kapoen, owned by Gvr...

As said earlier, Gvr arrived from Gauteng in Nellies that morning, so his total km's for the day ended up being maybe 900...still, the Kapoen kept flying!

Phalaborwa Gate was in our sights, and a meeting with the Ghastly Scipio...

What would that encounter bring? Good times? Retribution? Fond Memories? Instantanous liver damage...

Liver: "Nonono!...I'm out of this TR, thanks very much! :wall: "

Ok, no organs mentioned!

Now a sketch of our two new characters:

Gvr: A reprobate of modest proportions. Hyperactive, but with a good heart...(sorry, Liver), a good personality. Given to violent intentions toward large animals after a few drinks. Famous hunter, building demolisher, Zeiss loser and dried peach soaker.

Destroyer: A preacher by trade (no jokes). Full of bonhommie, joi de vivre and a laissez faire attitude! Family of Elzet, but not his fault! Pleasant disposition and razor wit! Unfortunately causes devastation wherever he goes...

Meanwhile Leachy, the old pirate captain and veteran forumite, was already in the Park and awaiting us somewhere, probably doing day trips from Punda to Pretoriuskop to while away the time...

Gvr: "Who is this Scipio? Why can't people just use their names?"

(Does a few pushups while driving, rolls the car a couple of times, etc.)

Destroyer: "Sounds scary! For what we are about to..."

RP: "Relax!...Newbies...phfft... ..."

Ahhh, how I missed your biting sarcasm, you wonderful forumites... :D

Day 1 Part 1.2

Here's a pic of the roomy interior of USS Kapoen!

Image

I've left Gvr's eyes in, and Destroyer's gaping maw...reminiscent of the old movie advert posters for "Jaws"! as can be seen, plenty of room for Gvr to exercise!

Then the scenery near Phalaborwa...really my favourite time of year...some trees coming into bloom, the rest slumbering...Africa is tough!

Image

VERY nice to meet Scipio, Scorps and kids at the gate...they postponed their entry just for us...

Scipio: "Blahblabla...death and destruction...blah...conspiracies...blah blah...ok, one more and then we stay...blah blah..."

RP: "Blahblah...forums going...blahbla...ok one more, but we must get a move on...blahbla..."

Destroyer: "He's not that bad after all!..."

Gvr: "Where is this Scipio person?"

RP: "Get off Scipio's Landy! It's not a toy!... "

And that was the ultimate quick meet, but excellent!

Then into the Park, with RP at the Helm!...

Image

Now I don't know how they do this, but these buggers are ALWAYS busy flinging sand or something onto the road where one must turn North on the Mopane tar road, same place, same time every year, and I ALWAYS drive past and have to come back with my tail between my legs and delightful comments from the crew:

Gvr: "So I thought you knew the Park like the back of your hand...? "

Destroyer: "Are you lost, my friend?"

RP: "I just didn't think that it...oh shut up! "

Right!

Day 1 Part 1.3

So we were unwinding and met a large group of Dagha (not Dagga) boys along the Ngwenyeni River!

Image

Then two started fighting!

Image

Image

And more fighting!

Image

Then, I kid you not, the bull on the left actually flung the other one over his shoulder into the reeds!

Here's a pic of the other bull, mercifully uninjured, having returned to the fray...but then the others started fighting! :

Image

RP: "Did you see that!!??"

Dest. : "No, I was busy looking for my seatbelt..."

Gvr: "I could also have tossed that buffalo! In fact, I've half a mind to get out and throw both of them! "

(Does a few Star Jumps in the rear of the vehicle...)

This is not really interactive, this time...learned my lesson there!

But to answer your question, these bull groups normally have no access to a breeding herd, which is escorted by its own bulls, so they joust and practise for when they can try to get into the action, or they accompany ousted bulls for safety in numbers!

However, I think much is to be learnt about them still, and questions remain...

Water and fodder play a role, obviously, and sometimes I think herd bulls also lag behind the herd as they get older!

There isn't really a "rutting" season, as with antelope!

Mildly amusing, Stark...not bad for an American, I must add!

Sorry I'm late again...prom night last night!

So day 1 Part 4

The good ship USS Kapoen steamed North relentlesly under the helm of yours truly!

The good news is, my two new crewmates had never been to Northern Kruger before, so I could tell them anything I wanted! 8)

We sidled onto the Letaba River causeway, with the customary hippo in attendance:

Image

RP: "This is the Limpopo River, and we are now entering Zimbabwe!"

Dest.: "Wow! Good driving!"

RP: "What can I say!"

Gvr:"Err...I would go and fling one over my shoulder, but I'm holding a beer now, and Kapoen has no 'cup holders'... :?

(This is true! :rtm: )

Then suddenly:

Gvr: "Stop!!!"

RP: "What! "

Gvr: "Labeo!"

RP:
(Scanning the vehicle and surrounds in panic!) "That is highly unlikely... :cam: :cam: "

Gvr: "No, look down here!"

Dest.: "Please forgive us our..."

RP: "I'm sorry, Gvr, I never new..."

Gvr: "No, you idiots, in the water!"

Image

RP: "Aha! Some of the Labeo species..yellowfish or mudfish!"

Gvr: "If only I were allowed to cast a little line now...or perhaps a smaalll dynamite charge... :hmz: "

RP: "Gvr...maybe we need to talk..."

Dest.: "Ooooh!"

As you can see, the river was pretty sluggish! Also a nice little croc!

Right!

I have no idea about all your innuendos...

Mods please arrest these people!

Newbie, I sometimes make purposeful spelling mistakes to see who's awake! :naughty:

Day 1 Part 4.0 (Sounds like some Adobe update... )

The other end of the bridge:

Image

Dest.: "Look out! What's that!?"

RP: "Well, the elephants here up North are far more violent than those you are used to in the South! Sometimes they destroy large concrete structures at random..they are very big up here...up to 12 metres in height!"

Dest.: "Fascinating! You have a very good knowledge of the Park! "

RP: "I do my best... "

Gvr: "I bet I could fling one of those machines..."
etc. etc.

Day 1 Part 4.1

Then on to Mopane Camp...for our traditional stop at the lower deck for a double Gin and Tonic!

Image

Dest.: "Wow!!..but I don't really drink, you know!"

Gvr: "What the heck have you been doing for the past 2 hours then! ? Whee! Logs to swing on!"

Image

Image

RP: "Those are crocodiles...very big up here, as you would imagine, having to tackle 12 metre elephant! "

Dest.: "I wonder if you are being entirely truthful, somehow...Please don't make me ask Gvr to fling you into the Dam...hic..."

Gvr pants in anticipation...

Hello, Flutterby! This from Webster's dictionary:

Mopane

Scientific classification
Kingdom: Plantae

Division: Magnoliophyta

Class: Magnoliopsida

Order: Fabales

Family: Fabaceae

Subfamily: Caesalpinioideae

Tribe: Detarieae

Genus: Colophospermum

Species: C. mopane

Binomial name
Colophospermum mopane
(Kirk ex Benth.) Kirk ex J.Léon.

This article is about the tree. For other uses of mopane or mopani, see mopani .
The mopane or mopani (Colophospermum mopane) tree grows in hot, dry, low-lying areas, 200-1,150 m, in the far northern parts of southern Africa, into South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Zambia, Namibia, Angola and Malawi. The genus Colophospermum only occurs in Africa and is the only species in the genus. The species name mopane is taken from the local name for the tree. The mopane is in the legume family (Fabaceae).

Sorry, and welcome, lion queen!

Just got back from WORK now....(someone please wake Sprocky... :D )

Day 1 Part 4.2

Image

This rather intriguing message posted above the outside tills at MOPANE Camp... :hmz:

To be honest, we ALMOST shuffled out without paying, then remembered, and had quite a difficult time convincing the teller to take our money! :(

We left rather sheepishly...

RP: "I thought you paid...?"

Dest. "I thought YOU paid!?"

Gvr: "I thought You paid!?"

Well...names change...Shingwedzi-Shingwitsi etc.

Day 1 Part 5

Every year the Gins at Mopane take a certain toll upon the occupants of the vehicle, and the long trek up to Singuetsi passes as somewhat of a blur through the blasted heaths in the heat of the day...USS Kapoen was no different:

RP: "A spot of music, perhaps? Next piepie spot is Olifantsbadpan...

Dest.: "Yesh!"

Gvr: "Yesh!...By the way, here's the cashhh you gave me to pay at Mopane! "

Dest.: "No problems, my son...enjoy the ambu...ambiu...ambie...atmosphere!"

RP: "A little Clegg should do the trick!"

And so the good ship sailed forth, and we saw bugger-all, but began to relax!

Meanwhile..from the diaries of ranger Leachy...:

No sign of the others. Have reached destination. Saw lion and tsessebe at Tihongonyene. Almost lost binoculars at Singuetse bridge. Hope the bastards aren't late. Am preparing general anaesthetics for myself. My uniform is unflattering. Saw impala near camp.

And then we chanced upon this fellow a few km south of Singwedsi:

Image

Dest. "Shtop!"

RP: "Scatterlings of Africaaaa...."

Gvr.: "What do we have to pay for now! "

These pics would have made Borderline proud!

Image

And at last a better view...this was a very big but very slow elephant...

Image

Dest.: "Wooweeee!"

Gvr: "Where is Leachy?"

RP: "Don't know, and don't care after the years...probably anaesthetising himself somewhere... "
