The Black-Backed-Jackal...

Known to be the sly, cunning and opportunistic one! :twisted:

Very intelligent though and very wary of its surroundings

. They are seen all over Kruger and even on farms! They can become a nuisance, :naughty:

even to other predators like Cheetah’s, occasionally harassing them off their kills. :twisted:

I see Jackals in Kruger on most trips, and they are always paired.

From what I believe they are coupled for life, :hmz:

very committed little animals. :lol:

They have a close cousin known as the Side-Striped-Jackal, which is a bit more elusive than the regular BBJ’s. :hmz:

I have only seen the SSJ on two occasions, and very brief sightings as well. :roll:

The Jackals I have here, is a pair that were inspecting their territory around the Tshokwane area on the H1-2. :thumbs_up:

They were scent marking, sniffing around and very alert. :shock:

They would trot like they do, then stop, look around, sniff, and carry on. :lol:

I must say I like the Jackal, I think it’s a beautiful animal. :thumbs_up:

A very rewarding animal to photograph, because I think they pose well. :cam:

In June this year I took my girlfriend along with me to Kruger.

It was her first visit to the park and she was really excited! :dance:

I used to tell her of all my stories and experiences and it used to make her quite anxious.

We had seen Rhinos, Elephants, Buffalos and as well as the elusive Leopard! :cam:

So all she needed was a Lion sighting to complete her first Big Five on her first ever trip! :pray:

It was around mid-day :redface:

and we were travelling down towards Afsaal on the H3. We had just passed Kwaggaspan, and in the distance came across your typical “Kruger Traffic jam”. :roll:

You know when cars are parked in all directions? :slap:

Reverse lights beaming? :doh:

Everyone trying to cram in one spot? :rtm:

That was the scene a few hundred meters down the road! Anyway, all we needed was a Lion to complete the perfect day for her, so I was hoping this was the sighting to produce that! :pray:

Then as we approached closer, :shock:

I saw the Mane of a Lion in the grass

and immediately said to her…”Give me a high 5, there’s your Lion!” :dance:

We got nearer to the sighting and noticed that this was quite a big pride, we counted a total of 16 Lions! :shock:

2 Pride Males…4 Lionesses…10 sub-adult cubs of which 7 were males! (Going to form a mean coalition one day!) :twisted:

We were one of the last cars at the back of the sighting but it turned out to be an advantage. :wink:

The Lions all got up and started walking in our direction! :dance:

I have to say it was quite a nervy experience seeing 16 Lions headed towards you! :shock:

I could have petted them they were so close!

(GF wouldn’t have liked that idea too much). :whistle:

We reversed the whole way back as they walked in front, behind and next to us, :cam:

eventually finding a pathway and heading off into the bush.

My GF was really lucky to have had a first time Lion sighting like this! :clap:

(Setting the benchmark quite high i think) :hmz:

I have decided to split the pictures into 3 parts because there’s quite a few to share. Here are some of them... :cam:

I would like to say a BIG Thank You to all of you who have followed this TR so far. :clap:

As most of you know, I’ll be leaving for Kruger tomorrow, :dance:

not as long as I wish to go, :roll:

but 3 days should make for a good trip. :cam:

So for the next few days, I won’t be around to spoil you with my photos. :doh:

But hang in there because I’ll be back on Monday with new pics and stories to tell! :dance:

I'm back from another awesome time in KNP! :dance:

No matter how long you stay in the park, it's never enough!

Just wish i could stay there permanently! :huh:

Anyway back to my trip, i had some great sighting's and had the pleasure of meeting three of our fellow forumites, Flutterby, Bush Brat and Mauxie! :dance:

A real pleasure to know we have such awesome people on the forum! :thumbs_up:

Was great meeting you guys! :dance:

I have over 800 pictures that i need to sort out, so please bare with me! :lol:

I was travelling on the S118, most of the area was burnt, when suddenly in the distance across the river bed i seen something running with a dust trail in tow! It was a Leopard! But he/she was so quick i wasn't able to get some decent pics. :roll:

Greetings again fellow 'Mites!

I finally got some time to sort out all my pics from my recent trip. :thumbs_up:

I know you all have been waiting patiently, so without any more delays, here we go! :dance:

Normally when one enters the Park, the first animal seen is usually an Impala or Warthog. But with me this time round, i started off my trip with one of the most difficult to "spot" :wink:

However it was a very brief and quick sighting, spotted her at the Berg n Dal turn-off.

After that kick start of a sighting, i came across number two of the Big Five, Elephants! :cam:

This calf was full of life, playing around with a dried leaf! :lol:

Proceeded on the H3 and seen this Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill

A Steenbok prepared to pose for a pic without bolting

Waterhole on the H2-2

There had been veld fires all around the South Western parts of the park, controlled burning. So there was alot of charred and burnt things all over, which kind of made it slightly difficult to spot animals in certain areas.

A fallen tree that was still burning

On the S118 i came across my 3rd Big Five sighting, a Rhino :cam:

Alrighty then, lets continue... :dance:

After having left the Rhino sighting, i turned on the S114 and saw this Hamerkop at the low water bridge.

Further down the road, some Impalas going to have a drink at James Pan.

We than turned onto the H2-2 and just past the Outspan Plaque, i saw this half burnt Rhino carcass!

Apparently there were Hyena’s and Wild Dogs fighting over the carcass a day before. :shock:

There was also an article on the front page of The Saturday Star 9/10/2010, about this Rhino that burnt in KNP with the recent fires! :evil:

Actually there is still quite a big debate going on about the whole incident. :rtm:

At Jocks Waterhole i saw a big congregation of Zebra’s, Wildebeest and Impalas :cam:

Vulture in flight (probably on it's way to the carcass :whistle:

)

Moving on...

Just before Afsaal i saw these Kudu’s

We had a pit stop at Afsaal and i decided to stretch the legs abit. So i took a walk to the most visited area at the picnic spot, the sightings board of course! :lol:

The board was full of colour! :shock:

I didn't know if someone was messing about with the pins or what, because there seemed to be all over the place, Leopards, Lions, Cheetahs, Wild Dogs! :hmz:

Anyway i decided to stick to my route and see what it would bring! :pray:

Further up on the H3 i came across a family of Ground Hornbills including a juvenile.

Then just after Mathekenyane, i seen this unusual looking rock on the H1-1!

Then this, I have no idea what Lizard that was? :hmz:

Just before Skukuza a Steenbok hiding underneath a Log

Then about a 100 meters from that one, another Steenbok covered in flies! Could it be sick? It looked kind of weak! Or could it have been deyhydrated? :hmz:

Continuing on from Skukuza i seen this Giraffe on the first loop road on the H4-1

Then some Vervet Monkey’s

This is a tree along the Sabie river. If permission were to be granted, i would build a Tree House in it! ( in my dreams :lol:

)

The usual suspects along the H4-1 going to Lower Sabie performing their antics! :roll:

Kudu’s and Impala’s seeking some shade under a tree

Stopped over at Nkuhlu, and managed to snap these pics of a Blue Waxbill seconds before it flew off! :cam:
