September 2009.
A steady wind blowing and the temperature soared.
Nothing moved but the grass and the trees.

Suddenly! There it was.
A swiftly appearance as though you know it is there, but you keep doubting yourself.
Signs of an elusive beast seen clearly by our lieutenant who made contact.
The next thing we know it was gone.

Has it been taken by a wild and fearsome opponent?
Torn to pieces and eaten half alive?
Or has it simply been chased off by the unnatural looks of the lieutenant or the sergeant’s?

This calls for further investigation.
Hours and hours were spend on the search.
Money and recourses seemed to disappear into a bottomless pit.
No luck.
Has it all been a mirage? Has our aging eyes been playing tricks on us?

Image

Then, out of the blue, we got a message. It has been seen again. Accompanied by another elusive creature.
The sighting was as clear as day as they were watched, from afar, sitting on a bald rock oat Mtimkulu Pan.
The inaccessible terrain made it very difficult to come any closer, but a shaky, grain filled picture gave prove that it was really true. Ladies and gentlemen. “We got them”.

How shall we go about catching these creatures?
Must we place a trap, throw some meat at it and hope that it might be tame enough to catch by hand or must we simply dart from a hired helicopter?

A plan was devised and a helicopter hired. A grid was planned and the search was executed with great precision. As an added extra a complete team of the roughest and toughest ex- Special Forces members were deployed to do a ground search.

Image

Although many signs were discovered of their presence in the area, they have succeeded once again in eluding them and are still roaming free and wild in the area between Phalaborwa, Letaba, Satara and Orpen.

Due to all the searches, more and more information has been gathered and it became clear that both of them has become a “pair” and were inseparable. They were man nor beast. We decided to leave them in peace and, for now, let them live the way they want to.
But still the one question remained. “What were they”?

PL and JB, we nicknamed them so, could be the missing link the scientists have been looking for all of these years and after a few months it was decided that a fearless team of highly skilled, both foreign and domestic, trackers, scientists, guards, bearers etc., etc., etc. shall be put together and for once and for all give a satisfactory answer to the question.

Together the lieutenant and both sergeant’s devised a cunning plan. In contrary to popular believe the lieutenants do work and the NCO’s assist. All the logistics were planned and the date of departure was set on March the 8th 2010.

In the meantime there was still heaps and heaps of work to do. Organizing flights. Getting all the gear together and in working order.

Image

Seeing to it that all the contacts were made that were needed to see us through this thrilling, but grave undertaking.
The condition needed a lot of work and stamina has to be build up. A grueling routine of wine, dine and 5 minutes exercise a day was set up.

Only T –351 hours left and then it is time to get all the gear together and head to the international airport to board the plane to Paris and from there to Johannesburg.

In the meantime a lot of time goes by and all of a sudden it is nearly time to depart.
work has to be done.
Stitching the clothes. Repairing the old boots. Get everything crammed into the backpack to see if it will all fit.
Getting the perimeter sensors in good working order. Nightscopes to be cleaned and camera’s to get into the right working order.

Image

Two sleeping pills were requisitioned for the long flight in and out of the country because a long trip has to be made after the flight and no man must fall before the start of the endeavor.
Weaponry needs a desperate checkup and a major overhaul. Everything must be in tip top shape.

Image

Meanwhile the lieutenant and other NCO were scouting around, trying to find as much information as they possibly can.
They scoured the countryside between Sabledam and Nwamazi lookout as much and as avidly as they can.
Recon the hills and valleys between Reenvoeldam and Swartkop West.
Even twisted some poor bloke’s arm for some satellite time.

Image

Getting a good picture of the terrain and surroundings.
Preparing the coming trip the best they can.

Franticly everything was checked and re-checked.
A big building on the eastside of Phalaborwa was hired and fully stocked for the upcoming search.
You can’t believe what one needs to make such an excursion a complete and utter success.
In accordance to the old popular believe the Landy’s were painted in the much needed camouflage colors.

People.
We are dealing with a highly successful species that have succeeded in eluding man for a very long time.
For more than 100 years the park has existed and never has this species been seen.
Cunning, devious and bushsmart they must be.
They must possess a certain amount of intelligence otherwise they would have been spotted and maybe even caught a long time ago.

We shall come, divide and rule!!! Veni, Divide et Impera. Or something like that.

Oops. Nearly forgot my binocs. Again

Lieutenant and the NCO, the one the most handsome of young men and the other who was chosen above al the beautiful people of the country south of Hannibal’s Horns had the perfect knowledge of the lands of Kruger of where the lovers had to be found.
They teamed up and soon became inseparable. Knowing each other like themselves. They talked with winks. With gestures. With signs. The more that was concealed, the more came known to only them.
Beauty and grace within the language that only they could speak.

Image

After the dawn had driven away the nightly lights and the sun dried up the last dew of the dark they went to the storage. Whispering softly. Eluding the guards. Testing their vigilance, their skill, their ability to fade away into the surroundings for they will need it to catch those illusive pair we called JB an PL.
From afar came a lion. Attracted by the smell of a freshly slaughtered cow. Her flesh needed to make the so loved biltong. Softly they made their way to a tree. Giving way to the lion. Watching if any of the guards will notice it, but more important: will they notice the lion?
Nothing moved but the lion approaching the waterbucket.
This fearsome creature quenched his thirst and wandered off to the carcass of the rind. With a bloody snout he roared till the earth trembled and wandered off into the bush.

Image

Well done lads. Nothing gave away your hiding places. Looks like all those harsh training methods have paid off.

In the evening a braai was setup in the bush at the end of the airport runway. Nothing moved and the bush was quite.
The sly Praetorian came out of the dark into the light of the crackling fire. Moving with stealth and suppleness. Healthy. Not smelling of the smoke of the leave addiction so many of us can smell from afar. “Lieutenant” he said. His thin voice not really matching his 6 foot 3 inches tall body. “All is well and everything is accounted for”.
“Thank you Praetorian” he replied. Shaking with a smirked laughter because of this big man with the funny voice.
“Come sit by me and let us enjoy some of this fine drink made out of the purist Malt and Barley”.
-“I must say. This is the finest I have yet tasted. What is it called?”
“Hansa”
-“Hansa? What kind of name is that? Some idiot been drinking to much of it while thinking up the name?”

Image

“This is the purest of all forms of Malt and Barley mix man has ever made and therefore it needed a simple but truthful name to go with it.”
-“Tend to disagree with you on that one Lieut. Man should have named it after a large building structure with a mote surrounding it. Then it would really have given the impact it needed. But luckily that name has already been given to something else”

Image

Laughter shook through his whole body.
“ Get down on the ground and give me 50!!!! Never have I been so insulted in my life! I think that you should know that I have been doing my utmost best to sustain the company that makes this fine drink!”
“You shall, from now on, be at the ass end of the line”

The Praetorian had enough after this little ordeal. He had learned his lesson and retired tired for the night.

The NCO joined the lieutenant at the dying campfire.
Silently they watched the fire turning from a bright orange to a glowing red bulge of coal.

Image

The air was a little crisp and in the distance they heard the cry of a lone hyena in search for a mate.

“Luit”, said the NCO, “we’re short one man. Can’t find him anywhere.”
- “Who?
“That daft little man that goes by the name Rhino in the Tswane language.”
- “Did he go AWOLL or did he simply went off for a stroll?”
“Dunno. Know him a long time and fought along him a lot, never gone off.”
- “Hmmm”
“Yeah”
- “Strange”
“I know”
- “What now?”
“Search party?’
- “Good idea”
“Then cut him down by the knees”
- “Yep. Discipline must be tighter”
“ My pleasure.”
- “What is Rhino in Tswane?’
“Can’t pronounce it. Starts with Tshuk or something like that”
- “Hmmm.”

Image

“Rhino” has not gone AWOLL. He was lying in the bushes behind the Luit and the NCO listening to their conversation. Sharpening his skills in bush tactics and stealth.
“Luit”, he mumbled, “you are in for a big surprise.”

The way to the barracks was more or less open ground and only about a meter or 4 was through a grass patch of elephant grass. It was also the most dark spot of the whole compound.
With the greatest ease he slid back a meter or 20 and crept silently to the patch of grass.
In the darkest spot he took a handful of grass from each side of the path and bound it together.

“Hehehe. That will teach him” he mumbled as he melted away in the grass and out of sight for all to see.

The fire died and the Luit and NCO got up and walked through the barracks.
Suddenly the stopped dead in their tracks. A soft scratching noise was heard. A branch snapped.
“Listen. Elephant”
Slowly the retreated along the patch to the barracks. Walking faster and faster and then ran.
Wack! The NCO fell flat on his face.

Embarrassed and as mad as a male leopard that got told away by the female he stood up and saw the grass knot over the patch.
Limping he made his way towards the Luit that just missed the trap and who stared at him for a moment and the burst out in laughter.
“What???”
Suddenly he became aware of an awful smell.
He looked down and saw a brownish dark- black stain on the front of his bush suit.
He realized that he had fallen into the dung of the troop of buffs that crossed the terrain this afternoon.

Image

A great noised startled them for a moment and as one the dived to the ground and crawled under a bush.
Into the light stepped a man, 6 foot 9 tall and broad shouldered.
It was Dutchie. In his hands he had “Rhino” as if he was nothing more than a sack of cement.
“This one was hiding in the dark under a bush Luit. I thought that I should bring him to you”

In an instant the Lieutenant realized that his men were ready to undertake the mission.
JB and PL shall be found. No doubt about it.
The only thing that bothered him was how to stop them from getting bored in the coming 2 weeks.
Some training to keep them occupied perhaps?

Only one thing was left to do.
Where do one find a tracker with the most exceptional skills that man can only develop with being in the bush all of his life?
Must find one or this whole walkabout shall go down the drain.

Through word of mouth we heard of a man closeby.
His skills were the best that we could ever want. Hardened by his life outdoors, he could find anyone and everything.
From Wildebees to Elephant. From Klipdassie to Fireant. Even the spoor of the illusive Painted Dogs and the whereabouts of their dens are no mistery to him.

Image

Dutchie was send to get in touch with him.
These last few days he drove miles and miles to catch up with Tracker only to find out, everytime he reached his destination, that this man was every bit as illusive as the ones we were trying to catch.
Then, in a local bar/ restaurant in town he finally caught up with him.
While enjoying a really good t- bone steak Dutchie laid down the plans for him and elaborated about the coming trip.

Image

Immediately Trackers eyes started to twinkle and he grabbed Dutchie’s hand.
“Man. Finally something is happening in this one horse town of ours.
Was getting tired to always taking guests out to see the Big Five and other animals and listening to their stupid questions like: “Do a hyena actually defecate?” etcetera.”

With joy in his heart and a feeling that this trip was going to be a success, Dutchie bought himself a bottle filled with the nicest liquid gold he could find and head back to the camp.
“Luit, he said, Tracker shall be standing by and as soon as we give word he shall be there. In the meantime we shall train some more and I have brought with me just the thing that will get us started.”
- “Hansa?”
“No. Better.”
- No Hansa. It can’t be Castle”
“Much better.”
- “Let’s see.”
“Here.”
- “Do you want to kill me. Get down on the ground and give me fifty!"

These last few days has really been filled of getting all the dots connected and getting everything and everyone in tip top shape.
Long days and short night slowly turned into excitement and a feeling of anticipation.
The upcoming trip was, for a short while, in danger to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

On the Phalaborwa side everything was checked and rechecked. The NCO, Luit, Praetorian, Dutchie and Rhino took it upon them to show Tracker what they were planning. Showing him around the map. Making sure that he exactly knows what the object of this trip was.
After he has seen the grainy photo he wanted to have a copy of it to show it to ‘some people”.

Far up north the other NCO was having a real difficult time to get everything done before he has to leave to the airport. With everything packed, sacked and ready for the trip he’s days were filled with hard work and trying to get everything in order so all would run smoothly while he was away. Some minor details threatened his trip, but eventually he got it sorted out and everything was ready to go.

Just one week Tracker came back with great news.
Having been part of the land all of his life and a scout for so long he came to know people from both sides of the law. One of them, a shady character who wanders around in the world of the illegal trade of animal parts, told him a story he heard from his great grandfather many many moons ago.
The story he told was one of a couple of humans that would no longer wanted to have something to do with the ways of their tribe and took it upon themselves to pack up and leave and form a new tribe.
Image
This tribe would only consist of a maximum of 3 people. A man. A women and a child. That way there would be no problems between the people of the new tribe and they would live their lives happily and with no interference of others.

Whenever the need would arise they would “nab” a male or female child. Nurture it to adulthood and from there on the saga would continue. This way they assured that there was no inbreeding and the tribe would be able to live on without the problems that the rest of mankind faced.
Could it just be that Johnny Bravo was the last descendant of this long lost tribe and that he got hold of Poplap, broke with tradition and now formed a new tribe of his own? Or was it simply because his “mate” had died and he was looking for a new one?

Image

In a little over a week’s time this mystery will unravel itself. Now it’s time to pack up and get on the plane tomorrow and get to South Africa for the last leg of our expedition.

So. Finally the time has come.
Only a few more hours to fill here in the cold and then I'm of home to my beloved South Africa and Kruger National Park.

Never thought that going alone on a trip, however wonderful, would be such a hard thing to do.
Saying goodbye to my loving wife and kids left a lump in my througt.

Everything has been packed, checked and re- checked.

South Africa. Brace yourself. Here I come.

A really good flight into Jo’burg was a pleasant surprise.
The sun came out with a beautiful smile to greet this NCO back on the soil that spawn mankind and is so loved by many all over the world.

While driving up to Phalaborwa to our main camp we callsigned Camp Elbas,
Image
the weather turned a bit wet and man, beast and plant welcomed it with the expectation of new life. Everywhere birds were balting through the air
Image
and animals could be seen roaming this great country.

Phalaborwa is was a welcome sight after 27 hours of total traveling time and after a wholehearted reunion with the other NCO (Sprocky) and his family, Blueeyes (Sprocky’s mum) and the Luit and a cold drink the rest settled in and the mind came to peace. Just unwinding.

The evening became a gathering at a local Pub and Grub with both families and an excellent dinner with some good drinks and finally meeting the Luit’s SO (Scorpion) and his kids. Grateful and very fortunate to have such great friends on the other side of the earth.

To familiarize myself with the surroundings both the NCO’s took a slow drive up to Letaba.
While taking notes and putting PIO’s onto our maps we noticed a lot of animals.
The Impalas were in abundance as usual and as curious as always.
Image
Even the small animals like Squirrels displayed themselves in a fashion that entertained everybody coming by.
Image
The buffaloes were hiding deep underneath the trees from the sweltering sun
Image
and the odd Bateleur tried to eat a meal that he had just caught.
Image
Beeaters could be seen everywhere
Image
and the Zebra displayed their magnificent backsides as they came down from the riverbank to get a sip of water.
Image

After a very good night’s rest I first had to deliver on a promise I made a few months ago.
A trip to Tsenze was in order.
The skies opened up on our way the and the most exciting and extraordinary sightings appeared.

Meanwhile the Praetorian, Dutchie, Rhino and the Tracker were send out on a scouting mission as far up as the Little Letaba to see what the county is like and to try to find any signs of the whereabouts of Johnny Bravo and Poplap.

As the skies opened up to unleash it’s full capacity and rain poured down on them they tried to wade through freshly formed puddles and pools and the thick sticky red mud. The roads and terrain was made impossible to access and while trying to drive through it an unseen pothole resulted in a broken axel.
Image
An ox wagon axel cold be repaired by just cutting a tree down but with a Landrover that would prove to be very difficult.

Leaving the Landy they decided to turn around and walk back through the bush.
Taking up a standard V- formation, Tracker leading, the small party took through the dense, thick terrain.
Many times they had to divert from their taken route because of the animals they encountered.
Image
The Elephants were nosy and wanted to make acquaintance with the strange two legged animals on their way.
Image

While making their way through this beautiful country a sudden movement caught their eye and immediately they crouched with their rifles trained to all sides.
Even the baboons ducked away as to make themselves as small as possible.
Image
The bush opened up and a cute face on a long neck appeared above the drying leaves of a bush.
Image
“Phew”. They started to unwind and the adrenalin rush slowly disappeared.

A whistling sound was heard and with a cry of anguish Dutchie fell to the ground. The peace that had just existed was no more and while ducking for cover they fired their weapons to all sides. The old bush tactics of an era long gone came back in full force. What was it?
Praetorian, who also was a medic, crawled back to Dutchie. A long hardwood quarrel with the feathers of a goose stuck in his leg and protruding on the other side was a nasty, iron tipped, barbed, spear like point.
Never has he seen anything like that. Tracker recognized it as a weapon use by old time poachers. An Elephant bow with matched arrows. Incredibly strong and specially made to bring down Africa’s giants.
Image
Did Johnny Bravo fired that shot in order to protect his clan or were there somewhat more devious characters nearby?

Slowly but carefully Tracker started to estimate the direction from where the arrow came from while the Praetorian tended to Dutchie’s wound. A faint noise made him look up and he saw Tracker signing him to come nearby. Years of hard earned experience made him find their attacker straight away. Poachers. Two of them.
He signaled the Praetorian to circle to the left and he started of moving to the right.

On our way to Tsenze the heavens opened up and it rained like it can only do so in Africa.
Then the special wildlife starts to appear.
The hippo at Sable dam.
Image
Leopard Tortoises everywhere.
Image
Small puffadders trying to make their way to the other side of the road.
Image
In between the showers the light shone through the cumulus clouds with a heavenly glow.
Image

The Ngobeni Lookout point was set in a beautiful display of different shades of green and brown.
Image
At the Letaba low water bridge a baby croc trying to catch some of the scarce sun.
Image

Tsenze was quite a revelation of thick, green and lush bush.
Rodgers came up immediately to greet us showing all blinding white teeth.
After showing us around for a bit the rain started pouring down once a bit and we had to seen refuge in the ablution block.

- “Rodgers. Have you seen any strange people walking around the camp or have you been missing stuff? Clothes etc?”
- “Nonnono Sprocky and Michel. No people I have seen walking here
Have seen Biiiig Elephant and last night when I went to the gate Closed it and with my hand still on the fencepole I noticed a big head just under it It was a Python!!
I was scared so much I ran straight back to my house through the narrow path through the grass
I had to jump to get through Because the grass was wet I had to pick up my pants because they would get otherwise. ”
How's that for a straight answer and that all with just one gasp of air. We laughed like crazy while picturing that great little man hopping through the long grass.

Before we moved on I presented him with a netbook because this guy is actually watching the forum on his cellphone all the time.
Image
Rodgers. Hope to see you soon on the forum.

Slowly we drove back and it stopped raining.
The bush came alive and big and small started to run, graze and move everywhere.
Trying to avoid the King Crickets was proven to be very difficult.
Image
Shikumbu was set in a beautiful light.
Image

Wonder how the boys were doing out in the field?

Meanwhile, back in the bush, Dutchie was still lying in anguish and the Praetorian and Tracker were on the hunt.
This could be the biggest, but most despicable “game” they have ever hunted and will maybe catch. A poacher.
Suddenly a crack like a whip and a wizz past Tracker’s head. Instinctively he ducked to the ground. “There are two” it echoed through his mind. Urgent signs were exchanged between our two heroes. “Movement.”

His R1 bucked against his shoulder and a cry was heard.
Image
Quickly he displaced himself. “Wounded or dead?”
Swiftly he rose to his feet and Praetorian and Tracker ran towards the cry. The man lying there with his hands against his stomach and the other man trying to help him. Both totally oblivious of the fact that they were caught and are facing criminal charges. Quickly they were apprehended and first aid was administered.

From a donga nearby an awful smell rose up in the air. Inquisitive as they were they investigated. “Bushmeat was lying there. Rotting and stinking in the sweltering sun. This was a gruesome sight and even these hardened men turned green by the mere sight of it. This was a good catch.
Even the animals around them were silent in dismay of the slaughter. The birds were even looking down on the scene in a silent display of disgust.
Image
Image
Even the elephants came to have a look and covered their eyes in pure dismay.
Image

Now this presents a real problem. Dutchie out of action and two prisoners, one wounded, and still a click or 8 to go through the thick bush. They tied the poachers to a tree and Tracker, the resident expert, shook off his backpack and took to the road. Slowly he reached the state that the zulu calls “Minza umblathi” or “eat the earth”.
He can keep this up all day and reached his destination, Phalaborwa gate, within the hour.
The ranger on duty quickly deployed every available manpower he had and in 4 hours after he left he was back. The authorities were over the moon with this catch.

Quickly the boys got in touch with the Luit.
-“Darn. This is going to be a serious problem.”
“Yes Luit, but nothing could be done about it.”
-“I suppose you guys will have to stay there till the investigation is concluded?”
“Yes sir. That will take a week or so. We will not be able to conclude out search.”
-“Let’s hope it won’t take so long. Meanwhile we shall continue as planned.”
“Yes sir. Good luck with that.”

-“SEARG!!!!”
“YES Sir!!”
-“Now we are really in deep …… Bogey’s attacked the boys in the field and there was a firefight.”
“Are they alright?”
-“Yes, but Dutchie is wounded and in hospital and the other two idiots are being detained.”
“%$#@!$%^”
-“Yep”.”
“Yeah.”
-“Load up. Tomorrow we are going ahead as planned.”

At sunrise they started out on their search. The sun greeted them in full force and while slowly traveling through God’s beautiful county side the saw the beauty of this land like the forefathers saw it during the Great Trek.
Image
Elephants, Impala, various birds.
They came to a waterhole which was pure heaven to the animals.

The morning was hot and sweaty.
Luckily we had a spare Landy and with the cool breeze blowing in it was bearable.
With the great hills of Masorini as their guide, they started scouting around the place where Poplap and Johnny Bravo was first seen. The only guide they had to go on was an old grainy photo.
Image

They drove there and found some old evidence of those two and searched in a circle pattern if there were any tracks left they could follow. They were quite amazed to find some, out of the ordinary, bush patterns that lead towards the north.
While following those they saw the magnificent Shikumbu hilltop
Image
rising up through the thick Mopani bushes.
Double banded Sand Grouse were everywhere
Image and perched up on a tree was a lone Southern Carmine Bee- Eater.
Image

- “SARG!!!”
“Yes sir.”
- “This terrain is getting the better of me. Let’s head out for Shikumbu and make camp there.
It will be a good lookout point to cover the entire area and establish which route we are going to take tomorrow.”
“Yes sir.”
- “We shall try and find some kind of clue as to where they are or have gone to.”
“Yes sir.”
- “Could be that they went for the high ground to get their bearings right.”
“Yes sir.”
- “Can’t you say anything more than “Yes sir?”
“Yes sir.”
- “Then please do so.”
“Yes sir.”
- “Blithering idiot.”
“Yes sir. Thank you sir.”

At the foot of Shikumbu they made a cold camp. No need to make their presence known as the light of a fire can be seen for miles and miles. Climbing to the hilltop to get a good view of the surroundings I started pondering the question as to why these people did not want to live their lives in modern civilization?
Why don’t they want to be part of a civilization that has all the modern facilities of warm, wind free housing, highly pollutive cars that will take you from one place to the other with great ease and speed, the joy of working till you drop to make a living, the sheer happiness of being able to pay your rent, mortgage and your meal for the day?
Why are there people who escape all of those assets we have acquired during ages of fighting and evolving just to live in peace and harmony with each other in the most deplorable way but inside a garden of Eden?
With these thoughts I reached the top of the hill and was looking at one of the wonders that will never cease to amaze me. The glorious sunset over the Eastern part of this magnificent country.

Location: On the edge of heaven
During the night the stars in the sky were like millions of tiny lights twinkling on the blanket of heaven.
The sounds and smells were amazing. The only thing missing was the smell of a fire. Crackling sounds of wood burning and the sweet smell of a slow cooking piece of excellent meat.
Due to the absence of this all they divided the sentry duties and went to sleep.

The next morning they took to the road. They decided to follow the feint tracks they found this morning,
The tracks led them down the Ngweyeni waterhole and there they found an abundance of animals.

Slowly they moved westwards.
Now and again they had to leave the Landy to track the trail on foot.
The trail took a northward swing onto the Malopeni trail.
This beautiful road went straight North and is as straight as a ruler.

Beautiful scenery unfolded as they moved on.
The hills afar were stunning in the blueish midday light and the sun made it very difficult. By now the temperatures had reached a peak of about 40 degrees Celsius.

The sight of the Letaba River was a very welcoming sight to the weary travelers.
They decided against going skinny dipping to cool off as the crocs were waiting for an easy meal.

They layed their overheated, tired bodies under a tree and started to scan the area with their bino’s.

Suddenly!!!!
Movement across the river!!
Will it be “them”?
With burning eyes we peared through the binoculars.
Swooping down came a Tawny Eagle and took a snake and flew off in a tree.

A truly magnificent to see.

“Luit?”
- “Yes Sarg.”
“What did you have to go to Officers school for?”
- “Don’t know. Do you?”
“Us NCO’s already knew how to eat.”
- “Trying to be funny Sarg?”
“Yes Sir.”
- “If you keep this up you will be in a whole lot of trouble.”
“Yes Sir.”

As the evening came nearer it started too cool off and they decided to make camp a few 100 meters from the riverbank.
A faint light was seen near a hill that glowed in the last light of the sun.

Strangely enough that was where the feint tracks were leading too.
Maybe it would be wise to mount a small nighttime expedition to find out what it was?
