The place I want to be most!!!!

Unread postby Mellory » Sat Jan 16, 2010 5:30 pm

I am new to this and will ask you to bear with me. I am going to attempt a TR........and after reading up on the tutorials etc I hope I get it right. So let me start at the beginning my SO and I were very happy to assist with a PEAP (Public Education Awareness Programme) run by JHB region of Honorary Rangers at the Mopani Conference Centre from the 27th Dec -2nd Jan 2009. We decided to go a day early to get in some sightings as we would not be doing much of that once on duty and we stayed at Letaba. We entered the park at Numbi gate and made our way up. I am not going to give you a step by step report but will bring the highlights, my pics will hopefully speak for themselves. Please also forgive me if my photos aren't all that good I have a good "car" but only have a learners license. I hope to improve my skills in the near future.

Thank you MM I suppose there is always a beginning and we all have to start somewhere I am really pleased I have finally become "active" on the forum it is great to be part of the "family" (family squabbles aside)
Boorgatspook thank you.
I am mad about taking pics of birds in flight so everytime we see one in a tree it is a case of STOP look he is going to fly.....grab camera ooops too late......off we go.....STOP...there he is in the next tree.... Camera now in hand all set and ready waiting...waiting...no he is not going to fly ok you can go... and then you can all guess what happens as we pull off! At least thanks to my long suffering husband and family I did get a few which I want to share.

Go!!!
We saw a huge amount of there white storks at Mopani and we were told that the reason they may be there in such big numbers was due to a possible insect infestation. Amazing how nature takes care of things.

Thank you MM yes I also saw a few more saddled billed storks than usual lets hope this is a good sign.
Our short drive early morning on the second day before leaving Letaba proved fruitful we first saw a male lion on the river bed who had a lot to say, and then not even a Km down we found a mating pair.

They ran across the road

And proceeded to do what they do on the discovery channel

Thank you Katja and Micetta
We saw a lot of "little" things and I just loved watching the chamelions crossing the road as they seem to put their right front and back left foot forward and then bounce a bit before bringing them down and so it went on maybe the road was too hot. And I tell you it was HOT!!!

To me being in the bush is about everything, how often do we stop and take notice of what is going on around us. I want to now relate to you what great pleasure I got out of observing a wasp yes a wasp. Prior to us arriving at our cottage our Chairlady of PEAP had spent the past 2 weeks there and on her departure she told me to keep an eye on the wasps nest (what they sting!!!)what she does is collect a blob of clay puts it in place goes and comes back with water, she then makes a hollow, goes away and comes back with a worm which she has paralysed, I am told that she lays her egg inside the worm not sure that this is what happens because unfortunately I returned to the cottage at lunch time to find the nest had been destroyed and 6 green worms on the ground and if you look closely at the pic below of the destroyed nest you can see an egg in each hole.(Can someone clarify this) I presume she lays the egg in the hole. I was thrilled to see her arrive with the worm and then to get more clay close the hole get more water and put in on top wow she was a real busy "bee"

The problem is not a shortage of PC's it is the lack of TLC and chores around the house but I still love her and her Pics and she so enjoys her addiction I could never stop her that would be like taking sweets away from a child
