Two BBJs taking it easy...

Image

Black-shouldered Kite did a 'jig' for us,,,well trained and posed as long as we wanted him to

Image

WE arrived at our 'HB sight', Kousant WH and parked under the tree.

After a while a BBJ came out of the bush from the left with what looked like a 'leg of lamb'.

He then came baxk or another came along sniffing and trotting around

Image

After watching this going on we decided to drive on to see where they kept going/coming from....

Just around the corner, with windmill in sight a vehicle was parked

We pulled up next to them looking all around.

And as I asked, saw Him. They said that he was alone , his 'gemsbok kill' was just behind the tree on the side of the road. BBJs had tried to steal some food but he chased them off.

He was about 5 meters from the road, but there was only a channel of about 1 meter wide where you could see him clearly.

So we pulled in behind them and could just see him.

Image

He got up briefly and plopped back down again.

Image

The BBJs crept closer but were not brave enough to grab a bite. They kept hovering at a distance.

While waiting for some movement a mouse kept us entertained

Image

stripping the leaves

Image

Eventually the other vehicle left and we moved into prime position

Image

he lifted his head, dropped it, looked our way...as they normally do...

He rolled over and faced the other way and seemed to be waking up

Kwang WH did not have much on offer and as we approached the kill, we saw that the vultures were roosting on a tree way to the left....

Image

Image

With all the vultures in the tree we thought that the kill sight would have been deserted...but....

Image

As mentioned before we did not see a fraction of this amount of vultures last year, and there are so many nests...a population explosion coming?

Pulling up to the chalet, 9B, another vehicle pulled up from the other side. Parents with son and daughter,
15 & 17 ish

We looked at each other  , they had a key with a camel thorn pod with 9B on it and I showed them ours with a wooden key ring and told them that we had occupied it the previous night.

Thus the 'womans intuition' that SO had in the morning.

We went down to reception to find out what was going on.

We were now supposed to be in 5...
and they had 9B and C.

I told the receptionist that before leaving for Bitterpan I had checked our return accommodation and we were booked in to 9B for both nights!!!

I apologized to our foreign tourist for the @#$%^&, I had 2 reservation numbers and so someone did not recognize that there was one client number booked for 2 consecutive days.

Back at the chalet they introduced themselves as Dutch living in Switzerland. They had come from MM that morning.

Did you have any interesting sights on the way?
Yes, that had seen quite a few animals.

Any predators?
Yes a couple of lion sightings, but a bit far off

Thats nice.

And south of Marie se Draai a leopard was in the road

Thats great!

and then a caracal in the road but it soon walked away in the bush

WoW

oh, yes there was also a cheetah with 2 cubs on the MM side

Reallly!!

It had a collar.

Only 2 cubs  :( .....it should have had 4 cubs :(
are you sure only 2....yes

More apologies, they said they would probably split the children....
More apologies..

Marketed the forum a bit.

SO suggested that perhaps we should just move....but this was to be only our second repeat night in a unit....had already packed and unpacked that morning...

Concerned about 2 cubs we went to bed....

DAY 8: 16 JULY 2009

It was to be a long days travel. Decided to go down to the lower dune road and then up to KTC.

Our last visit to Marie se draai did not deliver. We are yet to see a predator there. :( don't know why it is so special to others

Once again lots of vulture sightings.

A short distance from Jan se draai WH a herd of kudu on the opposite bank...a couple of nice big males. They certainly are far south now.

Image

There was fresh lion spoor, we back tracked them for some way. Every 100m or so there were fresh spray patches on the road embankment.... but alas all we saw was......and no I did not put my fingure in it to feel how warm it was

If the gemsbok were a lion I would have said that it is well fed 8)

Image

Image

As the river goes south it seems to get drier all around rather desolate

Image

I was sitting thinking that there is absolutely nothing around not even a jackal.....came around a corner and there it was sitting on the bank...

A secretary bird quite close by for a change
