Good day everyone,

I just came back from a very wet and muddy Kruger Park. The rain made it a lot cooler that is normally at this time of the year. We did not see as much animals as usual but the sightings we had were amazing!

This is just a short report of the big sightings we had with photos:

Day 1 – Letaba

Came in at Crocodile bridge at 6:00 and we were on our way to Letaba.

Jackal chasing baby Impala on H1-3 near Tshokwane

Reedbuck (3) on the H1-4 just north of Satara

Injured male Leopard on H1-4 near Olifants Camp turnoff

Just as we started the fire we heard a lion near the camp. Just as we arrived at the fence at the camping area, we saw the lion walking into the bushes. Unfortunately no photo.

At about 17:30 on the S52 near Red Rocks we got stuck in heavy mud with no way out. Luckily there was already a car stuck in the mud so we had a lot of hands to rescue our vehicles. After a huge struggle we got both cars out (18:10) near gate closing time. We had to take a detour and we knew we were going to be late. So I didn’t have time to take good photos of the animals we saw on our way to the camp. We arrived at the camp at about 18:45.

We also saw 2 Honey Badgers after our stuck episode but they were in the riverbank on the other side and it was already a bit dark so unfortunately I couldn’t take a photo. It was on the Shingwedzi tar road.

Thanks to everyone that helped that day to get my bakkie out!!

Day 3 – Sirheni

The day started with a lot of action… As we stopped at a Hyena family near the Shingwedzi Bridge, the one came and stood in front of the bakkie. We heard a nibbling and then he ran off with my number plate. Luckily I got it back a few minutes later.

Day 4 – Orpen

The day started of with an African Wild Cat running in the distance on the S57 near the T-junction. It was still dark and could not take a photo. We picked him up with the spotlight.

After that no real sighting for the rest of the day except a spectacular rainfall. By far the hardest rain I have witnessed in the Kruger. On our arrival at the camp, me and my brother decided to go for a night drive that evening – maybe we can see something for day. Great decision!!!

Female Leopard ±20 meters from Marula Camp’s gate!!! (Couldn’t believe it)

This was indeed a great way to end a disappointing day!! The two Leopards changed everything!!

SW, what a huge coincidence! We shared the sighting of the 2 wilddogs with you guys. SO had a conversation with you at Pafuri about the hyena that decided to lay claim to your vehicle's registration number that morning, and his concern about the wet road to Crooks corner, especially after you got stuck in the mud on the Red Rocks road. We also saw the people crossing the river from Zim's side. Makes one aware of how desperate they are if they are prepared to face the danger involved in crossing the river
And we might again meet up during June, as we will also be staying at Shingwedzi from the 27 - 30 June with family from New Zealand. There after will will travel south for another 12 days to Tambotie, Satara, and Skukuza. A final 3 days at Marloth Park to quench everyone's Nature addiction.

Can you believe this?? Yes I remember as if it was yesterday!! I always wondered if it is possible for someone in the forum that might have been present at the same sighting as me, and now this…

What a great trip with a lot of rain and muddy roads!!!

Did you see anything on that Pafuri gravel road that day? That is one of the most beautiful roads in the Kruger but I have never had a big sighting there.I think if you see a Leopard there in the “forest”, it would make an awesome photo!

Thanks for reading my Trip Report.

I took about 200 pics that day of those 2 Wild Dogs!!!!! We were indeed very lucky!
Look at this photo… Almost the same time as yours!!

Image

Here are some more photos of them, think you will enjoy looking at them!! (Some good memories)

I agree whole heartily that the Crooks Corner road is the most awesome, picturesque in the whole of Kruger. We saw lots of general game along the road, but in 2006, we saw a lone lioness just 100m from the picnic site.
As we are also into birding, we had a lot of special sightings along that road.
I hope we have an equally productive trip during June/July, and I will definitely remember the all important Yellow ribbon on the next trip. Maybe we might meet up again.

Might this be the plate less bakkie parked next to our vehicle?
