This has been a busy week with gate duties, various duties around camp, and a drive on 26th.

The drive was a mixed bag.....some good sightings, but also very quiet at times. We had a couple of ellie herd, some of the animals very close, but it was after dark so we did not stop with them. Also had 8 buffalo bulls in a river bed, and a number of other grey animals......

Impalas, scrub hares, and several birds before dark too and then 2 pairs of spotted eagle owls on the way home. We heard of a lone lioness but she had gone when we reached the area, and also heard of lions on the road near camp but again no sight of them when we got there (maybe because a herd of ellies was also on the road!).

Last night I was asked to do a drive but cancellations at the last minute meant I was not needed after all. On the way to the gate I had seen a leopard in a tree near the road and cars were beginning to block the road, so I stopped on the way home and directed traffic until gate closing time......then had a few minutes alone with the kitty!

Thanks for sharing all you experiences with us ecojunkie.

Are you disappointed when drives are cancelled at the last minute? I guess you get yourself all ready and look forward to what you might see and then no drive.

Glad you had a bit of quiet time with the leopard.

I hope your Christmas was what you wanted, and I wish you many wonderful sightings in the New Year.

Mixed feelings about cancelled drives! Last night I was somewhat relieved as I knew I would be up early again today....but had also been looking forward to it in a way...... It is more the wasted time in preparation and going down to the gate etc only to find cancellations that are frustrating. Often I might have started (or continued) doing something else but once I am home again it is not worth it.

Today long hot morning at the gate, but now quota reached, gate closed and I am home.

Another cancellation this morning......but this time a walk which has been abandoned because of heavy rain! Cannot control for the weather...... This rain was predicted for 2 days ago, but at least it has come eventually.

EJ, you stay in the best area in the whole park, we stayed in Berg en Dal for a few days, Malelane camp will be seeing us in December (what a camp!!! :D :D ), wonderful sightings, fantastic loops. We were unable to do all the loops because of the persistent rain but we loved the area. As for the Spar in Malelane, wow  it is huge, very well stocked, good and fast service.

A few days ago I did a morning walk with Patrick. Roads were muddy and it was a bit 'hairy' driving to the area for walking, but I encouraged him to keep to the middle of the road and keep going and we got there!

Saw hyena on the way, which was just what the guests were wanting to see, and impalas of course! On the walk we had giraffes, zebras, impalas, and almost walked into rhinos but fortunately I spotted them in time and alerted Patrick. They knew we were there but could not locate us and hung about a bit before moving off. We also twice found very fresh leopard tracks, but no sign of the culprit (suspect it was watching us though). There were also lots of hippo tracks about, so we had to watch carefully for them.....but did not see any.

Camp is emptying tomorrow, and things will quieten down a lot from then on.

My big ellie friend was back again this evening just after gate closing time so I could see him properly (and half the camp did too!). He once again decided the grass was nicer this side of the fence and stretched over to enjoy big trunk-fulls. He also stretched up and 'pruned' the marula tree next to the caravan......and ate the prunings of course!

I could see other ellies further into the bush, but they did not come near.
