I guess the milk-weed seeds would be the starter? Brilliant! Sounds like such an interesting camp.

We tried the flint story the first night with no success using only elephant dung and dry grass. Second night the sticks worked with dry grass, but third night we could not get the sticks to work for some reason.....almost got there but could not get the grass to flame up. The flint with the seeds was absolutely dramatic.....almost like a match put to gas that has been left a fraction too long before lighting!

So - keep a stash of milkweed fluff in your pocket with your flint if in the wild ?

Very interesting thank you ecojunkie!

I'd rather do these trails in my imagination, reading your reports. Apart from the fact that I'm too scared to walk in the bush with all the wild animals, I also don't camp. Just not my cup of tea. I'll leave it to the younger generation!

Thanks for that very interesting write up of your experiences. What a life. I would agree with Hilda about BEING IN THE BUSH AMONGST THE WILD ANIMALS. Liewer bang Jan as dooie Jan.( Rather a scared Jan than a dead Jan )
But I really enjoy your experiences in the bush. Thanks again for sharing.

It has been fairly quiet the past couple of weeks.....lots of zebras and giraffes around. We do not often see zebras here so it is interesting to see so many in small groups.

But the real story is the visit of a bull elephant in the middle of the night! We only had one caravan camping family and a couple in Bungalow 5 that night.

Well, ellie decided to walk through the fence in the bottom corner and after wandering around (proved by footprints everywhere) he settled for landscape designing in the top corner of camp. Trees were uprooted as he went for the succulent roots.....

The poor family in the caravan were afraid he would start on caravan redesign too.

I did not see him when I opened the gate but shortly after that I was called to assist and ended up patrolling with my rifle to make sure the campers were safe until the section ranger eventually arrived....just in time to fire 'noise shots' at the retreating ellie. I had managed to encourage him to leave.....straight through the fence opposite Bungalow 5. (Those guests had managed to leave earlier).

Today a clean up operation was done. So sad to lose some of our shade.

Obviously elephants can really just go where they please - and here was I thinking we were safe behind fences.

I think it was lucky there were hardly any campers/caravaners staying, as it would have been bedlam. I can just imagine how scared the people in the caravan were - no trips to the ablutions for them.

A big shame to lose some of the trees - they are much appreciated for the aesthetic value and shade.
Well done on getting him out of camp.  (very brave of you)

Wow! I can see why the campers had an uneasy night! ( But it will be a great story for them to tell when they get home!) . Thanks for the pics - makes it clear that the ellie was pretty busy.

And it also illustrates the point made during our Elephant Management lecture at the Orientation course..... It is not the number of elephants that matter, but the impact they have! One elephant, spending a bit of time in one area, can have far more impact than a large herd passing through from time to time.

That Ellie certainly caused havoc EJ! Although right through the fence, you managed to get him out of the camp! Well done!
