Madach (and spouse) in KNP 2005
Mon Mar 21, 2005 9:52 am
Well, the first reports are in, they arrived as planned on the Saturday afternoon.
On the Saturday they saw lots of ellies and birds, and on the Sunday they saw lots of ellies and birds, and a LOR. (Leopard on road). They were apparently looking for 3 leopards in a place (likely near Lower Sabie), so I asked him if that was a female with kids. No reply yet......
Mon Mar 21, 2005 3:29 pm
Spotted Black rhino at Nkumbe lookout.
Wed Mar 23, 2005 10:59 am
Recent sightings by Madach: Sable, lions and serval near Talamati, but all far from the road.

He has upped it a bit (why am I not there )
Two good leopard sightings on Orpen road

This will get the forum going...
Madach has just reported in a LIT, just 5 km from Olifants. He/she has a IIT (Impala In Tree) for companion, so it is not too frightened.
Remember the saying:
Don't shoot the messenger!
Thu Mar 24, 2005 11:31 am
Total amount of pics made of the LIT: 50 (Which means that it was further from the road then he would have liked.)
Gymnogene, ground hornbill, hyena's jackals en a very rare FT (front left).
(FT – flat tyre)

And another update:
Drie klipspringers op exact dezelfde plek waar wij ze ook gezien hebben. Fantastische sighting.
Or in English:
Three klipspringers at the exact same place we have seen them. Fantastic sighting.
I have asked him if he is now looking at the Wild Dogs, last year we saw the klipspringers first, and then 11 wild dog.
Thu Mar 24, 2005 3:29 pm
No dogs, but they have seen 4 lions on the S89 near Balule.
Thu Mar 24, 2005 5:45 pm
More lions seen (three) and a cheetah on the S89. The cheetah was too far away for photo's.

Nothing much today, he reports in at 07:11 SAST with this bit:
Lions, African Wildcat, hyena and lots of ellies. Traveling from Balule to Shingwedzi.
I had SMS'd him about the rhino's on the cam, and he replied that they had not seen at single (white) rhino yet!
We are one up on him

Yellow ribbon meet!
They meet Bertus near shingwedzi, and report no other significant sightings, but the next sms:
Another Yellow ribbon meet! They meet up with Busbaby. They are also stuck with what proves not to be so rare after all, another FT (Flat tire).
A new car has to come from Skukuza. They do an afternoons drive on tar only, as they are out of spare tires. Spot two cheetah on a kill, but not near the road. I want to see those photo's.
The new car will be driving up outside of the park to Phalaborwa gate and then to Madach (Remember Easter? )
They seem to have the car, but they report five tsessebe and two giant eagle owls near Punda Maria. This has me puzzled a bit as I thought they were supposed to go to Sabi Sands that evening.
Lions between Letaba and Olifants.
He also reports seeing Mafufunyane, that is one of the leopards in Elephant Plains, so I assume he is there now.
That also means it will be the last update (unless things have changed) because there is no cell-reception there.
Tue Mar 29, 2005 10:19 am
Reporting in again (seems to have cell-reception).
They have had "Unbelievable sightings", Mafufuyane in a tree with kill, and then from Safari (a female leopard there) with her cubs.

I'm back from my eight-day trip to the KNP and a three-day trip to Sabi Sand. The bush is really dense at the moment, which makes spotting wildlife very hard. Luckily we (my wife and I) rented a high car (Toyota Condor), which made life a bit easier because we could at least see over the high grass. I was surprised to see the low levels of general game. Even in the South there doesn't seem to be a lot of it around. The only exception would be the Satara area where, as always, there were lots of zebra and wildebeest around.
The park was busy over the Easter weekend, all the camps were fully booked and the camping areas were very busy. The roads in Kruger were all right though. I've not been in a sighting where more then 10 cars were parked (except a cheetah sighting just outside Shingwedzi 10 minutes before the gate closed, I think the whole camp was there
Even though spotting was tough I still had a pretty good trip. Here are the highlights:
Petrus spotted me at Red Rocks viewpoint near Shingwedzi. We planned to meet up at Shingwedzi for a drink but due to car trouble that never happened (sorry Petrus). Later in the day Bushbaby spotted me near Shingwedzi as I was getting ready for a bush walk. She immediately threatened to report me to the forum so I told her I was outside my car because I had a flat tyre
Spotted one at the low water bridge at Lower Sabie. It ran across the road so I didn’t get any pics. On 23 March we saw two leopards (separate sightings) on the Orpen to Satara tar road. I got some pics of the first one. Later in the day we saw another leopard near Olifants restcamp. This one had an Impala kill in a tree. It was about 150 meters from the road so I didn't get any decent pics of it.
Serveral sightings of lion near Balule and Talamati. Near Balule the lions were very vocal, they roared all through the night. During the Talamati nightdrive we saw lions hunting buffalo and a few minutes later buffalo hunting lion
We didn't see any white rhino in the KNP this year, but we did see a black rhino from Nkumbe viewpoint. It was faaaar away so I didn't get any pics, but through our bino's we got a good look.
Elephants were everywhere this year; you can't go round a bend without bumping into an Elephant.
We saw a couple of large herds of buffalo. The largest herd we saw was near Satara. The Bovine TB research team was circling this herd in a bakkie and judging by the dart gun they had with them they wanted to dart one of the herd. We watched them circle the herd for about an hour but nothing happened so we left them.
We saw a cheetah just outside Balule. It was very far away though. Even using binoculars it was hard to see properly. When we stayed at Shingwedzi two cheetahs made an Impala kill in the riverbed close to Shingwedzi. We got a good look at them and I got some pics, the light was almost gone though and they were far away so the pics aren't that good.
African Wild Cat
Saw one African Wild Cat early one morning near Balule.
We saw five Tsessebe crossing the road to a waterhole near the power lines that run between Punda Maria and Pafuri.
Saw quite a few of them near Balule and Satara.
Tons of birds around (Kingfishers, Eagles, Storks, Bee-eaters, etc). I'll post some pics later in the week.

Wow!! What a trip
I was in Maroela near Orpen and had obviously missed the YR on your car.
On 23/03/2005 at 06:00 we saw 4 White Rhino on the same road you saw Leopard, they were on the tar road, and a few KM's further was a Male Lion.
