Prings on the Road Again

Unread postby prings » Sun Sep 16, 2007 8:13 pm

Sunday 16/09

Lower Sabie

Roads travelled = H4-1, S30, S128, H10, H4-2, S28, S25, S27.

Sightings = 4 lion sightings, 4 rhino, elephants, buffalo, LIT = Big 5 again. hippos(including 1 walking down the middle of the road), guinea fowl, fish eagles, impala, grey duikers, kudu, bushbucks, baboons, brown snake eagle, warthogs, goliath heron, giraffe, zebras, ostriches, wildebeest, purple crested lourie, various birds.

It has been a very hot & very windy day. At times it is like a dust storm. At times it feels like the tent is going to take off. Even now at 20.00 it is not stopping.

Two great sightings for the day. First was a male & female lion on the lubyelubye bridge. The male was walking off the Skukuza end. We were in front of the other cars. The male then decided to walk back over the bridge. It passed the passenger side of the vehicle, within 30cms. I have never seen SO put up a window so fast. As it passed it looked straight into the camera lens. It then went to the back of the vehicle and looked at the forumite/3 pigs sign. It then put its head up to the clear part of the window, and looked in. My only thought was, is it looking for BERT.
It must like forumites, because it then proceeded to go about 20mtrs past our vehicle and sat in the middle of the road, bocking all the cars behind us. This is the closest we have ever been to a lion.
The afternoon finished with a magic sighting of a leopard in a tree. He moved on several occassions, and sat with no obstructions.

Monday 17/09

Lower Sabie

Roads travelled = H4-2, S28, S137, S130, H4-1, S29, S68, H10.

Sightings = guinea fowl, impala, fish eagles, elephants, giraffe, kudu, 2 CHEETAH, hyaena, buffalo, vultures, goliath heron, waterbucks, zebras, warthogs, ostrich, hippos, burchell's coucal, wildebeest, slender mongoose, klipspringers, baboons, various birds,

It seemed that the animals had all taken cover from Sundays very windy weather. No lions, leopard or rhino to be seen.

This was made up with our 90 second glimpse of 2 cheetah. One was laying on the road and the other on the edge. Just as we stopped a young kudu crossed the road a bit further up. In a flash the cheetah were up and on the move. They vanished into the thicket, not to return.

Mgoddard

It does get worse. I am doing this report listening to the baboons on the bridge and the night life, from the front of the western luxury river view bungalow in Skukuza. I will post the shots shortly.
These reports mean work too you know.

First off, i forgot to report on some gorgeous young ladies with a yellow ribbon. On Wednesday we stopped to look at a rhino, that another vehicle was watching. It was none other than Freda, Sue & Jose. It was good to meet them.

Thursday 20/09

Skukuza

Roads travelled = H1-1, H3, S65, S1, H1-2, H10, H4-1.

Sightings = giraffe, 8 lions, 6 rhino, buffalo including a large herd, impala, elephants including a large breeding herd, 2 hyaena mums with 2 pups each, baboons, warthogs, wildebeest, leopard tortoise in the middle of nowhere, fish eagles, 3 klipspringers sitting together, monitor lizard, giant kingfisher, vervets, waterbucks, steenboks, hippos, 5 ostrich, pied kingfisher, bushbuck, guinea fowl, various birds.

Sighting of the day, was the interaction between 2 hyaena mums, who had 2 pups each. We watched 1 mum & pups walk from their "house" down the road to the other "house". It was great to watch how they communicated & played with each other.

Friday 2/09

Skukuza

Roads travelled = S1, S3, S7, H1-1, H3.

Sightings = Bushbucks, zebras, impala, 8&1/2 rhino, kudu, elephants, giraffe, warthogs, hippos, egyptian geese, ostrich, wildebeest, bataleurs, 4 southern ground hornbills, klipspringer, lion, various birds.

Stayed out until 13.30, then spent the rest of the day in camp. Watched a confrontation between a rhino and elephant at tpt dam.

It was a day for human stupidity. I will post a report on these incidents later.
