Air Support to Clip the Wings of Unscrupulous Poachers

Unread postby SHR PR & Media » Wed Oct 15, 2014 1:48 pm

The SANParks Honorary Rangers are continuously exploring ways and means to assist their conservation partner, South African National Parks, in the demands of the rhino poaching war.

Kruger National Park, the flagship of South Africa’s vast and wild wilderness areas, has been targeted by wildlife criminals in recent years, as it boasts with the largest single population of rhinos worldwide. Kruger National Park is currently under siege as our iconic rhinos are being slaughtered on a daily basis.

Major General (retired) Johan Jooste who took command of Kruger National Park’s anti-poaching unit in 2013; together with kingpin strategists defined three distinct protection zones in Kruger National Park for better monitoring and security purposes. Kruger National Park required more helicopters to patrol the Park in the fierce combat between conservation versus destruction.
SANParks Honorary Ranger Janssen Davies took the initiative and set the ball rolling for this prioritised air operation. He contacted Major General (retired) Hugh Paine, ex-South African Air Force, who in turn referred him to an associate, Tokkie Botes.

Tokkie and Marina Botes are passionate about conservation and highly concerned about the decimation of our rhinos. They offered their Bell Jet Ranger 206 helicopter to assist in Kruger National Park. The main priorities would be to fly the Kruger National Park forensic teams and investigation officers to freshly poached rhino carcasses.

Tokkie and Marina are the owners of Skeerpoort Verspreiders (Pty) Ltd, a company based in the Brits area which sells and distributes bulk fuel and aviation fuel to filling stations, airfields, farmers as well as the mining industry.

The advisor to SANParks’ Air Wing, Raymond Steyn, of Pilatus PC-12 Centre, Southern Africa, organised the clearance procedure and appropriate agreements for this specialised initiative, whilst Tokkie prepared his helicopter which included a pilot and fuel for the operation.

A valuable 50 hours of service was sponsored to Kruger National Park with a market value of R450 000 towards this worthwhile mission! Several crime scenes were visited, butchered rhinos discovered and ballistic and forensic evidence gathered in this operation which covered the south, middle and far north of Kruger National Park. Negotiations are underway to extend the initiative by another 50 hours of service.

Our rhino numbers are dwindling under the onslaught of poachers. If unchecked this could lead to possible extinction. But it is heart-warming to know that the South African public through people like the SANParks Honorary Rangers and citizens like Tokkie and Marina Botes are stepping in to the breach, to do their part to guard and protect our wildlife heritage.
