Is it ok to request an id for a tree that's not in a park?

This is in my Johannesburg suburban garden. I'm pretty sure it's an exotic. Or else my ability to follow the key in the tree book is not that great! (Quite likely, even though I now half know what an interpetiolar stipule is.)

Overall shape:

Striking flowers. Lots of birds eat them - louries, mousebirds, cape whiteeyes, barbets and bulbuls most commonly.

The leaves are oval, some with blunt points. They're arranged in opposite pairs.

The bark is rough and the trunks/branches branch a lot.

Thanks for any answers or pointers!

Joe

Hi Joe,

 almost 100 views and no one even answering this actually very easy and unmistakable garden tree. It is the "Pineapple guava" tree - Feijoa sellowiana (= Acca sellowiana) from South America.

Yes the birds and insects absolutely love this tree... for the flowers and the fruit. Have you tried the fruit? You really should they are absolutely delicious :D
Usually just a mission to get an edible one because the fruit flies also love them
I sometimes try and pick them from the tree before the flies get to them and also because they bruise easily when they hit the ground.

Nice photos
