Is this tree a Pod-Mahogany? This tree sits in the middle of the road on the S130 (a loop of 13 km on the main Croc Bridge - Lower Sabie rd). I did not take a close up of the leaves unfortunately. Taken in June 2010. According to my book guide Pod Mahohany should have no leaves in June.

Agree, from a distance it looks like a Pod Mahagony, leaves can stay on longer, general guidelines are given in the book. The rest of the bush still looks quite green.

Your tree nr. 1 is the Tipuana tipu. It is an invasive species from South America. It is categorised as a level 3 species, which means that it may only be planted, sold or distributed with official permission.

Am I correct in saying this bush is a Blue Bush, Diospyros lycoides seen in the south of Kruger in June this year.

Was asked the other day by one of my guests while guiding in Kruger what this small shrub was on the side of the road. It gives a typical bush smell and never noticed it before.

Anyone know what it is? :D

Looks like one of the Vernonias. It *might* be in Elsa Pooley's KZN wildflower book, or maybe in one of Gerrit Germishuizen / Anita Fabian's offerings. (Thinks: maybe we need a KNP wildflower book as companion to Schmidt-et-al's tree book ...)

Can anyone help with ID of this shrub, seen close to a spruit at MZNP in September 2011.

Hi Arks

The plant in your photos is Melianthus comosus, in afrikaans "Kruidjie-roer-my-nie" (not sure of the common name in English)

This plant is used for the treatment of sores, backache, septic wounds, bruises and a good few more.

The leaves, when rubbed or crushed, emmits an unpleasant smell.

Thanks for your quick and interesting reply, brian. I googled the latin name, and the English is given as "honey plant" — which would seem to me to be rather opposite of what the Afrikaans name (as translated in my dictionary) means!

Hi, I do not have any reference books or knowledge on plants in the Kruger, but I would love to get an ID on the following flowers. All these flowers were recorded in November 2012 in the southern parts of the Kruger.
