Saw these Adenium obesum flowering quite profusely - late December
At the junction of the H3 and S110, B & D area, Kruger.
Most of them were growing at the base of a "nurse bush".

I think there's some confusion here. Adenium obesum is, I believe, the desert rose, NOT the impala lily. The impala lily is Adenium multiflorum.

Ok now Im more confused that a chameleon on a smartie box is the pic of Impala lilies and the name is something else or is the pic of something else ?

The Impala lilly is called Adenium multiflorum. But in some (older) books it is called Adenium obesum var. multiflorum.

I think this is where the confusion came from.

But this is actually neither!

This is Adenium swazicum.

It is closely related to the Impala lilly and was previously known as the Summer Impala lilly (it flowers in summer while the Impala lilly flowers in winter.) Today it is known as the Swazi lilly. It is one of our endangered species.

In Gordon Rowly's book on Pachypodium and Adenium, he calls it Adenium obesum var swazicum

Botanists are known for nit-picking

Now you know why I prefer common names above scientific names ... they change less often.

Well probably not true in the case of the Swazi lilly.

So ... can we call it "that beautiful pink flower found in Kruger which flowers (mostly) in the summer and is found on a rather thick stemmed little bush"?
