Hi,

Could anybody tell me where to see Caracal in the Tamboti area?

I have never seen a Caracal in the Kruger only in the zoo.

Thanks :)

Samantha

No probs onewithnature-specifically go on warmer winter days when I have seen them there at all hours of the days. From my experience they seem to like the 'valleys' between the dunes on the left hand side of the road between the whale lookout point all the way to Preekstoel and even Tsarbank. Look under bushes or hopefully just get lucky and find one hunting close to the road 8)

Hello, and welcome, Mant!

My only caracal sighting in Kruger was on a night drive at Rabelais Dam, very near Tamboti...Also a roadkill outside Orpen Gate!

I always wonder if roadkills constitute some form of a sighting. I suppose it's personal - if I saw a dead whatever, I'd probably be too upset to appreciate it in any way. Anyway, you're darn lucky, Richprins (living up to your name, I see!).

Hi Richprins,

Hope I see one at Rabelais Dam.

Some people are so lucky at seeing these animals. :(

Thanks,

Samantha

A live one!! outside Orpen gate... ( but there were 2 other roadkills in the space of 1km at first light: a nightjar and spotted thick knee..)

This one caught a Meerkat! My first ever sighting. Pic not too great as it was overcasted and near closing time...

Excellent Yolande! I also read one reference that said the first 5 kilometres from Skukuza towards the Malelane tar road produces caracal, as well as African Wild Cat. I've still to see them though.

I’ve seen one at Addo during the day. It was surprisingly relaxed.

it had spots on it's chest and stomach - does that mean it was a young animal?

Can't remember the exact time but it was about 10 min before the gated closed. Did you read my TR? We got stuck on the Red Rocks road due to heavy rain in December. Luckily other cars got stuck with us as well so we had some extra hands to help (and witnesses!)
