Thats a real treat Robyn Putter. I am so

I think we should not be alarmed seeing them so close to human developments but rather thankful that they still exist given the incredible pressure that we have put on their natural habitat.

Knowing that they somehow manage to survive is a really inspiring. In a few years time who knows if such an experience like yours will ever repeat itself.

Thanks for relaying your experience

Nice pic hoephoep
Robyn...absolutely amazing to see it there. I had an idea they were on Table Mountain but great to have one on Lions Head.
10 years earlier my dad saw a steenbok on the same road.
Otherwise have recorded Cape Fox and Porcupine around UCT as roadkill sadly!

This caracal I saw in March 2008 when I was driving from Punda Maria to Shingwedzi. First he was sitting directly near the road, then when he noticed the car he jumped into the bush. Had to wait patiently nearly an hour to get this photo.

Thanks for your comments. Here are two other pics, not as good as the one before, of the caracal.

Thanks Crested Barbet
I wonder what happened during the hour you had to wait?
Did the cat always stay at the same spot or did she do any movements?
Did you know the caracal was still around or did you just hope to get another view?
I know that you need a lot of patience in these moments, I often waited a good time in vain

Hi, flying cheetah,
we only switched off the engine and waited patiently. It was really hot, no aircon, hired car. Watched the grass and waited for the caracal to show up once more. Cars passed by. We waited, but it was worth it. We saw that the caracal moves a bit in the high grass. It was not windy at all. So you could see that there was something in there.

Our best experience ever was a very, very lucky day we had in the park approx 2 years ago.
We started the morning seeing a beautiful young leopard trying to get into a warthog hole along side the h1-2 to Satara. We were the only car for over half an hour before she strolled off into the distance.
The day ended with 3 fabulous sightings-:
1 - the 1st on the way back to Balule we sat in awe as a beautiful male caracal ambushed a francolin that had been annoying him with its pal and then devoured it, whilst the friend francolin still persisted in running around the caracal, moaning much better.
2 – we then drove off toward our camp in silence - both star struck by what we had just seen only to have the most gorgeous young female African wild cat along with her kittens coming wandering into the road a proceed to sit on the road side for almost 40mins, happily meowing away to each other oblivious to our presence – again the only car.
3 – lastly, just as we thought it could never get better – a side stripe jackal popped out of the bush (I never realized they were that far up in the park) and merrily trotted with a companion across in front of us into the dark.

I did post pics of all the above on the Kruger picture sightings gallery when it happened.
We love Kruger. Whether we see all the gorgeous above or just get to spend a weekend in its beautiful surroundings. It’s our piece of heaven.

Sheesh, PJL. Lucky you.

The 3 times I have been to Addo, I have successfully avoided them!
