Stunning pictures Jan and Roelfa.

Just returned from our latest trip and we had had four glimpses of leopards until our last camp - Berg-en-Dal.
On our last day we set off early and went up to Mpondo dam. On the way back, just before the turn off to the camp, we met a young couple, who excitedly told us that they had just seen 2 leopards lifting a Zebra into a tree near Berg-en-Dal camp gate. I immediately thought that it must be a mother and grown up cub.

On our arrival we managed to negotiate the large number of cars and could see a large male in the tree with remains of the Zebra. Unfortunately I had to shoot towards the sun to get the picture.

I thought that the male had appeared and driven the other leopards away.

In the evening we set off to look for a buffalo as my wanted to make up the big five and eventually found one lone bull on the mountain loop, which I must say I don't particularly like because of the state of the road.

On returning to where the leopard kill was there were still a large number of cars and we were told that the 2 leopards were laying about 200 metres away in the grass. We decided to go back to the camp and light the braii, then spotted the leopards walking through the bush.

To our surprise there were actually 3 leopards - a male, female and young cub. They were walking along as if on a Sunday outing. It was cloudy and getting dark, hence the poor quality of the images.

The female did seem to be flirting with the male, but I have never come across this before. Leopards are normally solitary and male and female only come together to mate, and not normally whilst a young cub is still with the female. I can only think that the male was the father of the cub, otherwise it wouldn't have tolerated it.

Has anyone else any other ideas?

We went back to the camp and were told by our neighbours that the cub had climbed up the tree and dislodged the zebra, which fell to the ground and the female had then dragged it into the bushes.

When we left the camp the next morning there was no sign of leopards or zebra and no indication of the previous days drama.

We had the most wonderful sighting of a plus/minus 1yr old leopard on the Mphongolo Loop near Shingwedzi on New Years Day of this year. We were able to spend about 2 hours with him and it goes down as a highlight, not only this last trip, but in the 20 yrs I have been going to Kruger.

What a beautiful specimen he is Jan. I wonder if that could be the same leopard that Kaapsedraai saw around LP.

Unfortunately the leopard only gave us 2 hrs :? . He became very agitated when a car arrived, who did not switch their engine off and was running their air con as well. He eventually jumped down and disappeared into the undergrowth. We tried to look for him for a long while after but he had gone. Unfortunate, but it goes like that sometimes.
