Recently I received a certificate for adopting a rhino (Vallabh incase you wonder and he/she is awesome. We talk everyday :D). LOL .. back to topic :)

Anyhoo .. I saw Klokkies was the "Official SANParks Wildlife Spokeperson" and this reminded me about the tremendous honour I had in meeting Klokkies way back in 2006. The story behind it all was very sad and I'll try to tell it as I can remember it .. so some of the details might be a bit greyish (I blame old age for that ... and DB) :)

There was Klokkies and Oortjies. They were both orphaned at a very young age due to poachers (Oortjies was caught in a snare and lost one of it's ears as a result). As such SANParks decided to step in (not the norm) and placed them in the Boma. Klokkies and Oortjies became ambassadors for Kruger. Used in educational purposes etc.

[Disclaimer - This information is as I can remember and some details might not be 100% correct]
Both were released later in life in the northern parts of Kruger (Oorjties not too sure) but it seems the lack of growing up with their mother (or whatever the case may be) resulted in Klokkies not adjusting. Klokkies is back and as far as I know Oortjies has passed on while roaming the Kruger.
[End Disclaimer]

They were gentle giants. It was amazing to be able to touch them and interact with them (behind the fence though). It was a once in a lifetime experience which I can only be thankful for and made me truly appreciative of these majestic animals.

Here is few photo's we took on the day of Klokkies

Methinks it is more a case of too many 'veggies' consumed by one W@H

A lovely story W@H! Was this on one of the Duke Pack visits?

Eh ... not that day .. I even remember showing WTM a Carmine Bee-Eater :D

Nope ... this was when JacoV, myself and WTM decided to go and visit the then KNP Spokesman. That's the trip that WTM forgot the tent roof again and we had to slum it out in the Pretoriuskop Guesthouse because WTM could not manage the steps at KNP Spokesman's home

I remember Klokkies......was privileged to visit him a number of times. He loved having his ears rubbed. Sadly he is no longer there.....died last year.
