Lovely photos, havent seen one for a while!

Hi guys. I was just wondering when last someone spotted Samango monkeys in Kruger.

We went up to Tzaneen Letsitele area and spotted some int he forest on a hike.
Have there been any sightings of them Kruger and if so when last was that?

I read an article that said they havn't been seen for a long time in Kruger and was wondering if that was still so?

Samangos are considered locally extinct in KNP. It has been many years since any Samango population have been reported in KNP as far as I am aware. There was an effort to re-introduce them many years ago, in the Pafuri area. It was not successful, and the introduced animals have died out or moved out.

KNP is not ideal Samango habitat, so there probably never was a substantial Samango population. At times nomadic animals or small groups may have been present.

They are however abundant areas in the mountainous areas along the escarpment not far from KNP. This is much more suitable habitat for them. They are largely arboreal, much more so than vervets. They don't mind wet environments either.

The last report I heard of them was by n ranger in 1998. Since then dont think there have been any reports of them been spotted.

Did see them myself in KNP in the middle 80's traveling with my parents up cloce to Pafuri pinic spot.

We do see them from time to time at Bridal veil and lone creek waterfalls close to Sabie.

I'll be looking out for them soon, and asking around... It would be nice to find that there are still some.

Someone in the know told me there have been sightings in the far northern Kruger .

I'll be up north next week and wouldn't mind seeing them (SO hasn't seen samango yet)

I could not get more specific info , Joshi , but to say that they have been seen by field staff .
I did for a fact see some many years ago along the Levuvhu .

Hi Baffers not sure about the question but your distribution map looks like that of the Vervet monkey and not the Samango Monkey. Somangos dont occur in the Kalahari and Namibia and any dry areas unless ive missed something

My friends and I did the Nyalaland Trail last May and we saw 3 across the Levuvu River (just outside Kruger boundary and near Lanner Gorge)

Saw a group about 20 yrs ago along Nyala Drive too

I totally agree....that is the wrong distribution map i feel..... they are notfound in arid areas at all
