In january I was taking panning pictures of running baboons at Sunset Dam when this baboon passed. As you can see, it is carrying two babies. Twins or just a baboon with two babies? I read that baboons very rarely have twins.

Impisi, I like these motion shots!

About them being twins, I don't think so. I think it is for the first seven weeks that the mother keeps the young one under her, after that it rides on her back. If this is the case then the older of the two is on her back.

Thanks Sprocky for the comment. Sometimes I like to "play" a bit and take some different photo's. Now I wish I also had the time for a "normal" photo but unfortunately the troop moved on real quick.

The gestation period for a Chacma baboon is 6-7 months. According to Richard Estes (Behaviour guide to African mammals, page 516) females "reproduce young roughly at 1,5-2 year intervals". To me the young don't seem to differ that much in size, but the young under her looks to be more black and is maybe younger. You could be right. But when they have twins is there room enough under her for 2 babies?

Hey, Sprocky!

One would struggle to have twins 7 weeks apart...heeh heeh!

I think those are twins, Impisi, and almost all mammals have twins sometimes!

Distant relatives. That part of the family would'nt
listen, now look. Our ways have parted. Though
amusing they are a very cunning family on their own.

Sister of mine living in the greater Knysna area, and
knowing my interest in wildlife has been telling me
about this particular Chacma causing havoc in the
area.

There happens to be some kind of rare bird species
breeding at the top of one old pine tree (dead).
Every once in a while meneer Chacma comes along
and cleans up. Gone all the breeding eggs.

Dismayed everyone always looks on because there is not much one can do about it, and he could'nt give a damn kind of attitude. Let nature be nature sure.

But suddenly raw nature is experienced right in the
middle of your home. Fortunately meneer was facing
an open door, when sis came down the steps. Oh
and did he have attitude apparently when coaxed
out the house.

This goes even further, he now scales gutter pipes
and other, climbs through bathroom windows and on
his way down passes the main bedroom, the kiddies
bedroom in order to ravage the refrigerator for eggs.
In the middle of the night.

Please bear in mind, of late, we secure our dwellings
thorough against intruders. If Chacma found a way in then it will be highly unlikely there be another way
out. Don't block or obstruct bobjaans movements.

Sanparks recently proclaimed large areas of land in that vicinity, thus integrating urban living with nature
conservation. What measures does Sanparks have in place to cope with this kind of incident. I think it to be a great idea but then not everyone thinks like me.

It just reminds me about my old man at the south coast. He took no s'i.. when the vervet monkeys
raided his paw paw tree. Just took his pistol and fired a shot. Two gun charlie was his nickname.

Nowadays that is no longer tolerated. Would like to
hear your views Sanparks. Shoot him?- no is my reply.

Watched a troop having a jolly swim close to Skukuza. They were happy to submerge completely under water. And played the usual games of chasing one another. Not the best pics, but great to have watched! Said to people in a passing car-they are just like humans-like their swim when it is hot! :D

Baboon enjoying marula, just outside Satara. I noticed two animals of this troop are missing a part of one of their hind legs.

Thanks Richprins and H. Erectus.

H. Erectus: I do not remember seeing that the baboon was missing some fingers or parts of it. I like to believe I "caught the moment".

Richprins: no problem.
