The july update from Marna can be found here.
(I'll buy some space at that website, then you don't have to wait for a few seconds.)

Not a Serval but a Caracal. Still say too big for AWC, as Nicolette says AWC's are only slightly bigger than domestic cats

i have to agree..i think its a caracal... too big for AWC...but the tail length does concern me... but i will say more chance of it being a caracal then an AWC.. of course thats just MHO..... :?

Just to let you know there is a picture on the Kruger park website www.krugerpark.co.za of a serval photographed near orpen under predators page 3 I think - although I do think that this is an african wildcat think the picture is deceptive in making the cat look bigger than it actually is if you take the surrounding shrub as a guideline then the cat is quite small

Question.
I've seen many people refer to the AWC as Felis lybica. Should it be considered as an own species or just a subspecies of the Eurasian wild cat (would make it Felis sylvestris lybica)? Looking at relevant literature (among other MacDonald's Encyclopedia of mammals) and ADW on the web seems like it ought to be the latter. Anyone having other references or opinions?

My Field guide to Mammals also refers to the AWC. as Felis silvestris (lybica group)
But it does go on to say that at least 13 subspecies have been recognized.
I'm sure Marna would be able to fully explain the exact meaning. (if she can find the time in her hectic schedule)
