Which Mammals Have You NEVER Seen In Kruger?

Unread postby onewithnature » Fri Aug 15, 2014 6:55 am

Over the past 29 years, I have been privileged to be a part of some of Kruger's most stupendous sightings. Yet, despite much, and sometimes almost frenetic, searching for the rare and secretive ones, I have still a few that have refused to show themselves to my probing eyes. These include:

AARDVARK
AARDWOLF
BAT-EARED FOX
BROWN HYAENA (if they still exist)
BUSHPIG
CAPE CLAWLESS OTTER
CARACAL
GREY RHEBOK (if they still exist)
HEDGEHOG
NATAL DUIKER
NATAL RED ROCK RABBIT
PANGOLIN
SAMANGO MONKEY (if they still exist)
STRIPED POLECAT
WATER MONGOOSE

I'm seldom fussy, but of these I'd dearly LOVE to see caracal, aardvark, pangolin, otter, and hedgehog. And, if I ever get to see (and, of course, photograph) a brown hyaena in Kruger, I'd be the most famous mite on the planet for a for weeks.

What mammals have YOU never seen in Kruger, and which, if you were given the chance, would you MOST want to?

We saw a brown hyena about 30 years ago on the road between Shing and what is now Mopani, mopani had not been built yet in those days, it was casually walking up the road, I took a pic but it's so long ago and I can't find it

My list is similar to yours OWN. We were fortunate to see Cape Clawless Otters frolicking in the Olifants River 2 years ago for the first time. I would also like to see Reedbuck. Never seen them. Are there still Oribi's in the Kruger? If so I would add them to the list plus Suni. I have read on the forum that a few lucky visitors have seen Suni in the Punda Maria area. We have never seen any of the rare species. We also do not see lions, leopards, wild dogs and cheetahs with every visit, only sometimes, but it is fine. The abundance of Impalas compensate for all sightings not seen

I have never seen Aardvark, hedgehogs or porcupine in KNP :wall:

We have bushpigs, hedgehogs, porcupine, serval and caracal on the farm but have I haven't been so lucky in spotting all of them in the wild

Great sighting of otters, GM.  You must look for reedbuck along the upper reaches of the H10, around the Nshawu watering places, or any wet grasslands. Oribi I've seen around Pretoriuskop and Suni by Punda Maria. Wild dogs are a gamble and some people spend their lives chasing them on heresay and internet postings - we prefer to let Nature surprise us, which she does every couple of trips.

What a privileged mite you are, Jeanni, with a farm packed with wildlife.    We haven't yet been lucky enough to see a porcupine in the daytime - like that reception photograph of a leopard harassing a porcupine on the road - but a couple of times on night drives, and servals both on night drives and in the day around Satara and Lower Sabie.

Sad that you can't find that special pic, Carol. It seems that now BH's are no longer resident in Kruger and, if one is ever to be seen again, it will be a nomad passing through.

CV, do you mean to say you haven't yet had the pleasure of seeing Eland and Lichtenstein's Hartebeest? Both are best seen up north, the former around Elandskuil and the latter either on the north-eastern side of Kruger or around Pretoriuskop.

Well until last December, I had never seen wild dogs. So I was very happy to see a bunch of them. But they were lazy and didnt do much tricks for the customers. That's fine. We just sat and perspired and watched them for quite a while. And then until July this year I had never seen a cheetah. And then I saw two lots in one day. I nearly died I got so excited.

But there are lots that I havent seen. And there are so many that I dont even know exist hey. But right now I would really love to see a pangolin because it seems that's one of the animals about to call it a day on the planet.

My list is very much the same as yours OWN, except ......

Over the last couple of years I was able to tick some off on my ‘want to see' list
Bush pigs – Crocodile Bridge night drive
Thick-tailed Bush baby – Skekuza Resident
Water Mongoose – Late night visitor at tent in Tamboti
Large Spotted Genet - Late night visitor at tent in Tamboti
Sable – Pretoriuskop Area
African Wild Cat – Satara Resident
Civet – Skekuza night drive
Serval – Crocodile Bridge area

And on our last visit I :cam: an elusive 'blackie'

I would however be ecstatic to see the following:
Cape Clawless Otter, Porcupine, Pangolin, Honey Badger, Roan Antelope, Brown Hyena and Caracal

Saw a caracal and a honeybadger walking side by side on the road to Pretoriuskop - got so excited didn't know which one to photograph!!! Managed to get photos of both but not in the same photo unfortunately - there was a little Uno driving past that did not even seem to be that interested in our sighting - took one look and drove off!!!

What on earth is a Natal Red Rock Rabbit?? Haven't seen any of those on the list - also no hartebeest but see wild dog fairly regularly, including once after leaving Orpen gate and driving OUTSIDE Kruger (they were running along the fenceline)!!
