My one and only SSJ sighting was in 1993 on the H-7 between Satara and Orpen. No pic, unfortunately he didnt hang around long enough.

Welcome and great pics, patries!

What is remarkable is that both seem to be adults, yet don't have the VERY visible white tail-tip..(Hence the Afrikaans name "witkwasjakkals") :hmz:

Maybe Duques or Boorgatspook can find some info on this!?

RP, I have done many searches, but can't find info anywhere for a possible reason for the lack of visible white tail-tip.... :hmz:
But if something comes up i'll post it....

I've seen Side-Striped Jackal four times in kruger: twice on night-drives, and twice more in one trip near Letaba (I can't remember the exact road, but it was two of the dirt roads that branch northwards from the Letaba-Phalaborwa tar road. I could have well seen the same pair twice? I did take photos, but need to unearth those as it is probably 15 years ago or more since I saw SSJ.
And twice I've seen juvenile BBJ that had me confused as to whether they were saddle-backs (which was very indistinct) or SSJ. Eventually, the tail tip convinced me they were BBJ.

Nice pics, patries. I must unearth my one and only pic of SSJ, scan it and load it here for all to gloat over.

Anyone have an inkling how common these little guys are?

How common are SSJ, and in which areas of Sotuh Africa do you think they are most common? Anyone know?

I have had two sightings - one near Mopani quite a few years ago, but the other was in march 09 and whilst it was fleeting, it was an awesome sight!
Was on the dust road from Mlondozi(sp) - picnic spot near LS - heading north back towards the tar tsokwane road.

There was a huge white rhino bull standing in the middle of the road, lengthways.
Its head was resting on the ground as it stood. It was enjoying the early morning sun on its back (cloud finally broke). We watched for a while then where eager to move on but the rhino was having nothing of it, it stood motionless for about 10 mins soaking up the rays.

As the wife and i watched in amusement at the stubborness of the bull, i noticed something in the road, about 40 metres behind the rhino.
It looked like a BBJ but wasnt sure.
Eventually the rhino woke up and trotted off. As we pulled forward we saw a side-stripped jackal and 2 pups - about the size of a large domestic kittens.
By the time i realised what it was we were seeing, the mother led her pups into the long grass never to be seen again!

No pics to prove, but had i a serious camera, i might have been able to take a pic of the 3 SSJs framed by the legs and belly of the rhino!! :cam:
