Hey guys

Saw one. Can't believe it yet... :) We were drinking sundowners on day 4 of the Lebombo Trail and on the way we were passing one of the 3 buffalo carcasses we had seen in the day and one crossed the road right in front of us. It was amazing. They are tiny! I never thought they would be so small judging from the pictures I had seen. I saw the white-tiped tail and the white stripe very clearly.... Still can't believe it though... :D

Check the cam highlights for 23h30 on 5 June, and make up your own minds. Definitely SSJ in my opinion.

Believe it or not guys and gals, but a side-striped jackal passed right in front of my car this evening at 5:29 pm just before i turned in at the Satara gate, making a bee line for the waterhole where the webcam is, this was only my second sighting in 35 years and well over a hundred visits.

Is it true that the sidestriped jackal has a white tipped tail while the BBJ has a black tip?

Good question and welcome Jehosaphat!

WAC is right, but nature has a habit of throwing the odd spanner into the works.

For example, all wild dogs are said to have white tail tips, but there was a female with a black tip that accompanied a pack around Skukuza for a long time in the late '80's!

Still, 99,9% guaranteed!

WAC: The jackals were out all day. We saw them at the start of our morning drive, probably about 6:30am, then again when we returned at about 11:30. Then we went on a Sunset drive and saw them at about 4:30 and then on our return at about 7pm.

I think this is quite strange behaviour?

I saw 2 of these beauties on the road to Renosterpan near Afsaal this morning. They were really relaxed and I was able to coast quite close to them and get good pic - until a noisy delivery vehicle passing on the tar road behind me spooked them.

Cannot afford any mb to repost in this thread, but have posted 2 in my thread under trip reports 'needed a fix so....' (I believe it is possible to copy it into here, but do not know how....)

Saw 3 young Side-striped Jackals last week (23 Jan) on the road to Renosterpan waterhole. The 3 youngsters were on their own, just wandering down the road.
