Seen 2 in last 8 visits, both at around 8:30 in the morning - on Timbavati road & on S28 - found them more skittish than bbj

Seen them mainly in Pretoriuskop area, and my first one was along the Manyeleti- Kruger border, just before that fence came down - 1995?

Always nice surprise seeing them !

Saw side-striped jackal while driving back to BnD from bushman's trail on saturday morning. A first for me.

Saw one on the 20th June in Sabi Sands...

It was before 8:00am, my FIRST ever! A good sighting too, its such a nice feeling to get those unusual sightings. The ranger said that Jackals are uncommon in that area in general, he has only seen four Jackals in the last year, all have been SSJs.

Only seen one once - in Afsaal picnic spot. He was fotogenic.

Ive seen these animals only twice, first in 1997 on the S1 and the second time in 1999 north of the Mestel Dam.

Can I hear from people that spotted them more recently in the KNP as to where they can be found?

Christo, saw two or three on the road one evening coming back from a sunset walk while on the Napi trail in June 2005. Obviously while Napi is in a wilderness area, this road wasn't far from the main road linking Skukuza & Pret'kop....but I'd suggest doing the trail

Last year we were watching 2 tsessebe a little bit north of Letaba on the H1. Suddenly they looked both in the same direction! Predators we thought and a little later...2 black backed jackal came out of the long grass. At least that's what I thought (it was quite some distance away). A few days ago I went through my pics from that trip again, doing some processing and cropping. I cropped the bb jackal and guess what?

Very low light in the early morning.
I thought they were BB jackals until Impisi08 pointed out that they are apparently Side striped jackals...

Saw one in walking in front of the car on the road for 1 min at about 8.00hrs 5 kilos outside Skukuza on the H1-1

Saw a side-striped jackal crossing the road in front of our car on the S118 dirt road between Afsaal and Malelane very early one morning, incidentally, also saw a caracal (the only one I've ever seen in the wild) on the same morning on the same road.

Saw one once at the turnoff to Vutome dam Road on the Hlangulene dirt road upwards. And the next year again near the same spot! (Around 1997) Seems they are very widespread though rare.

Interestingly heard the call on a Pretoriuskop night drive, quite different from the BBJ.

Saw 3 one morning outside Punda Maria. Managed to get a couple of pics before they ran off in to the long grass.

Hi all,
Years ago I saw my first side stripe at Sunset dam. I have heard them around Talamati.

I had now twice sightings on night drives at L/ Sabie. I saw last year October one on a night drive at Lower Sabie. The guide (not one of the permanent ones, think he was a honarary ranger), identified it wrong. The tale is a dead give away.

Some of the tourists on this last night drive also argued and were confused and thought we saw black-backed jackal that looks scruffy. A dead give away is that the Side striped has a white tip on his tail while black-backed has a black tip.

I think more people see them and mistake them.
