Has anyone ever seen a maneless male lion in Kruger? I took these photos today on the S28 8km from Croc Bridge camp - the right lion was definately a male and hardly had any mane at all - just a bit of fluff on his jawline. The lion on the left looked pretty normal for a young male.

Hello, JEG!

Males without significant manes are not that rare...called "kraagmannetjies" in Afrikaans, but never seen two together!

Rare!

So interesting JEG, I wonder if its a genetic thing?
I remember when we saw the 4 nomadic Lion brothers together near B & D last year one of them definitely had much more mane than his siblings who I presume where the same age and litter, but maybe not?

The one i saw looked like a lioness except for his size. He's reminding me of the man eating lions of Tsavo
