Thanks Dotty. So, we have to assume that the lioness was injured due to human action? I did not read about this conclusion but maybe I have missed it......

Hi, yes, we also saw this Lioness and, went back a few times....the last time was at 12:15 midday when, to our mind, she took het last breath. Having witnessed many "road kills", i think this was another one. We went back at 16:30 and she was gone . Wonder if the Parks' vet would tell us what was the cause of her death ?

The broken hind leg makes me lean towards human inflicted wounds (speed to be exact). But as we have learnt many a times on this forum jumping to concusions will get us nowhere. It breaks my heart to see my favourite animal in such a sad state.

The lioness is/was pregnant, and may have met with misfortune during her "seclusion" from the pride.

Hyenas would probably also have had a go at her by then...hence the wounds. They attack from the rear, and a puncture wound is apparent.

Could even be another lion.

The broken leg sort of spelled the end...but the cause could be anything.

Adult lion/vehicle collisions are EXTREMELY rare!

Could even have been one of those nomadic solitary lionesses, who got tackled by the local pride? Who knows ...

Is there any way of getting the Skukuza Vet comments??

A sad situation.

i believe if this animal was attacked then most of these comments are out of sympathy.

how many lions deep in the bush have been attacked but no-one sees it so their is no-one to worry or care.
its just the fact that she was close to the road that everyone wants to now know the out come. if it was a vehicle, lets hope she was helped, else as is always said about nature..........survival of the fittest........only the strong survive.

Please Mods, kindly pass our request on to the Vet - that would put this haunting scenario into perspective... if it was nature, so be it. At least then, nobody will jump to conclusions??? (i.e. human inflicted...)

Don't want to be a downer here, but that may not happen!

Lions are not endangered, and I presume the vets welcome any fresh carcass to check for the cause of death and check up on feline aids and TB etc...

It is not uncommon for a giraffe or zebra to kick out at a chasing lion. They sustain all kinds of injuries, and a back leg is very possible.
We saw a juvenile male with a broken leg south of Satara a few years ago and I doubt very much if it was caused by a vehicle.

Well I hope really that the Vet did not come. Reason: This Nature and the Circle of live and death always exist. and only because of that reason we will have a Balance going on. If we interfer the Balance can easily getting out of order. And that is a really bad case. we should not play God. We do have great Systems and knowledge but Nature is always stronger. as long we don´t know whart really happens we should leave it as it is.

It will be a different Story when a Lion get hit by a Car and we can Proove it that is another Game. Also here I can understand the reason but even here I don´t like the inteference. But that is another Story.
