They are found in Kruger ;-) about 3000 (Census-2003)

Sorry for doubting this, but i really just couldn't believe that there were 3000, and almost never seeing them.
So i did my own searching and wa-la... the Census for last year in Kruger indicated 300 eland and not 3000.
They are however in the process of changing it to this years stats 8)

A bit of Google:
There are 750 eland in Kruger in 2004. (source).
There are 600 eland in Kruger in 2004. (source).
There are 300 eland in Kruger in 2004. (source).

Pick any one....

DQ, I wouldn't say things like this by simply just doing a google search, and taking info of the first available site
My search was enquiring from the person IN Kuger at Scientific Services who actually work with this. So this is the info on the eland (and other mammals) I got from them.
So for me... thats the official figure

It was just to point out that there seems to be no consencus.
I'll take your "official" figure, that means I only have to find 300...

I can't remember my source to be honest, but I won't quote anything that I don't think it's reliable. But then again, I have been misled before, so it could have happened here ;-)

I must be honest, 3000 sounded like a lot to me, but I have also seen Eland relatively regularly. So it seemed plausable.

Anyhow, will see if there is some better, reliable and quotable figures somewhere else

Ai jai jai... being difficult again i see
How many times do i need to say this... the figure i gave is the official (reliable) one, so you don't need to go and find something better!

You had me going on a big search now on THIS site to find it so that you can give it a rest...
So please go and have a look:roll:

Had a close encounter with a huge herd of these
fast-becoming-my-fav-animals yesterday and noted some interesting behaviour.

This herd was large (250+) and they had babies with them (I counted 25 that I could see). What struck me was that all the young ones were with one cow. I looked so funny! They were following her everywhere.

Never knew that Eland have a creché-system!
