Kamea

After many sightings were posted of a very popular female Wild Dog in KNP, the SANPARK forum members decided to give her a name.
Everyone had a chance to vote for a name and at the end the most votes went to Kamea. It is of Hawaiian origin, and its meaning is "the one (and only)".

How to identify her
She has got a unique "K" mark on her left front leg and from the right side she can be identified by the white stripe on her neck.

Where in Kruger
She roams in the area of Mathekenyane (Granokop) area near Skukuza. Some recorded sightings of her go as far as Kruger Gate, the S1, S112 and the surroundings of Granokop.

Interesting facts about her
In 2007 she was spotted in a pack on the S1
In July 2009 she was seen at Granokop with 3 pups. (Not in a pack anymore)
October 2009 she and her 3 "pups" were spotted in the same area and the youngsters were much bigger then.

Let’s use this thread to keep track of our beautiful dog and make it a new challenge to find her when you visit the Kruger again.

Please post all sightings of her as well as photos.

Let’s make her famous and enjoy her presence!

I have never spotted a Wild Dog in Kruger, but hopefully Kamea will be the one to get me off the mark when i go in December

She is beautiful! She is less "spot painted" than most wild dogs; her back is almost plain coloured. I would like to meet her

We saw Kamea in Oct. 2009 near Granokop with her 3 'pups', and they were all in beautiful condition.

BUT at the same time its quite a joke to choose a Hawaiian name for it in a country that apparently has 11 official languages and a number of others

Well, I did suggest a Xhosa name, but no-one liked it.

Gunner I think you misunderstood the Joke of it but its ok dont worry!

Personally if there was an animal to be named in Hawaii and it ended up with an Afrikaans name I would also find that funny!

No worries, atleast the dog has a name hey

Lets not fight about the name guys – everyone had the same opportunity to come up with a name and this was the one the most people liked.

… There are very few of our names that are of African origin!

I voted for Kamea even though it's not from SA origin - no problem with that - but I don't think we should make this thread about the name - the votes were cast - period. Let's make it about posting many many MANY pics of this beautiful creature ....
