Yellow Mongoose (Cynictis penicillata)

Classifiction
Order: Carnivora
Family: Herpestidae
Subfamily: Herpestinae
Genus: Cynictis

The Yellow Mongoose is a small mammal averaging about 1/2 kg in weight and about 500 mm in length. A member of the mongoose family, it lives in open country, from semi-desert scrubland to grasslands Southern Africa.

As many as twelve subspecies of Yellow Mongoose have been described. In general, the Yellow Mongoose has lighter highlights on the underbelly and chin, a bushy tail, and a complete lack of sexual dimorphism. Southern Yellow Mongooses are larger, have yellow or reddish fur, longer fur, and a longer tail with a characteristic white tip. Northern subspecies tend towards smaller size, grey colouration, a grey or darker grey tip to the tail, and shorter hair more appropriate to the hotter climate.

The yellow mongooses in Kgalagdi are sadly very tame because people feed the. :x
When we stopped at our unit in Twee Rivieren they came running to our car. While unpacking the car, we constantly had to chase them of to prevent them climbing into the car.

Not poisonous, but the bite must be disinfected and kept clean. The possiblility of Rabies should not be overlooked, very very nasty.

Hi guys!

Some interesting Yellow mongoose stuff:

They will either dug their own burrows, adjust existing springhare holes or share a burrow system with meerkat and ground squirrels. Apart from safety, living in deep burrows with a more constant internal temperature, enables them to escape above-ground temperature extremes. A colony may occasionally relocate to another burrow system, apparently to get away from parasites. Yellow mongooses are renowned for their heavy parasite loads with some 35 different parasite species recorded on them. These cute little creatures are also a major carrier of rabies and implicated in more than 70% of all non-domestic incidences of this disease in South Africa.
:hmz:

... more to follow ...
