Jaco, indeed a great sighting. Thanks for the posting.

SW, it is not the same sighting as ours. Laksman and my sighting were on 22/3/2009 and Jaco’s in April. This proofs that the herd stays in that area.

I don’t think that the Roan sticks to the Eland herd. Jaco mentioned that the Roan joined the party. It was the same with our sighting. They are in that area and one must go and see…….

8) sightings!
I agree Skopsie; it's probably just a matter of rare antelope congregating at the same waterhole at the same time more or less. If there's say a loner, it might join any herd for safety reasons otherwise.

Wonder why the rare antelope stick together...?

Great pics, Jaco!

Hey, Zapman.

That's quite a good question!

Eland don't stick together with any other animals in Kruger...they are very nomadic and seem to be less tolerant of humans than other antelope.

The waterhole in question is pretty remote, and has only been open to tourists for the last decade or more!

The rare antelope struggle immensely to compete with common grazers, specifically zebra, as these draw lion to water points. (according to the water policy pundits in Kruger, who have closed down a number of waterholes for this reason.)

The rare antelope are far less water-dependent.

(Or to put it another way...their numbers and habits don't make it worthwhile for lions to follow them... :? )

I think this water hole is going to become the most popular one in the park if you keep on posting sightings like these!

Hi, Zapman

We have just returned from KNP.

Saw a small group (not really enough to call a "herd") of roan on the S50 just before the S143 turn-off. Then a short distance onto the S143, saw another small group. Couldn't count them, but there seemed to be quite a few youngish animals. As my alias is Hippotragus, it was wonderful to see the Hippotragus equinus!!!

Also saw tsessebe on the S143, near the second group of roan.

Didn't see eland in KNP, but saw a lot in Mapungubwe before we went into KNP.

Lots of Sharpe's Grysbok around Punda Maria and also on the Red Rocks loop near Shingwedzi.

Good spotting! Have a wonderful trip.
