I have also had to reverse a long way smartly for solitary bulls on narrow dit roads but fortunately each one was not chasing but walking purposefully and getting more cross.

The other confrontations have been with matriarches of herds when they suddenly appeared and we have become trapped in cul de sacs. We revved highly both times and as she hesitated, we gapped it. Both times there were new born calves in the herd.

Right next to the road, as in 2 meters from it. We parked on the other side of the road. :D

Close-up. Could have gone a lot closer, but the light as you can see did not want to help me:

At the moment this one is thinking: Shall I or shall I not?

(He did attack, and not a mock charge...)

Not all close encounters are of the scary kind. :D This old lady was quite happy to be photographed just before Kanniedood birdhide near Shingwedzi:

Image

This isn't a zoomed picture - she was too close. You could hear her "tummy" rumbling. (I know it's not her tummy, but at least most of you know what I mean. )

I spoke to the young lad driving the Pajero that evening - he was most impressed with how close the Ellie came to the car....

[edit]Oh yes - I forgot to mention, for WTM's benefit, that this was on the S100  [/edit]

As requested:
Still sizing us up, but look at the trunk...

Around the moment that I asked Madach to start the engine, and to put it in gear I think. I switched to my other camera, with the shorter lens.

And here comes the cavalery! Not sharp, not even level, but keep in mind that the car was accelerating fast at this moment. I wonder why?

BTW duques, that looks exactly like the time Tshokwane charging the photographer:

Charge

Like he said, he should have stood his ground and shouted at Tshokwane. I think he was lucky that Tshokwane's tusks were that long. He could not get to him properly to kneel on him and cruch him with his head.

Saw this elephant cow on Sunday on the H10 near Muntshe. She and her herd were making their way to Mlondozi Dam where they turned up about 2 hours later.
She had a magnificent left tusk - the longest I have seen in a cow.

no, I didnt zoomed in. I could toutch this guy if I had dare to do it
No this was not a ellie in the zoo, it was a wild ellie!
He gave me a good fright. I noticed he was in musth after he came so close and acting so 'strange' (agressive, than calm again and all of a sudden came wide eared to the car. as you can see on the pics.)

This was on the Orpen road near Satara! Ok, I did use the tele but it was very close anyhow. Luckily this old boy acted very friendly.

Update on the Pilanesberg Elephants
The eight remaining elephants of the initial 17 burnt in the fires that ravaged the Pilanesberg National Park were returned to the park on 7 November 2005 from their temporary holding facilities in Hammanskraal.

Under the watchful eyes of NSPCA Wildlife Unit staff members, Karen Trendler (wildlife expert) and Mike Jamieson, all of the eight elephants were initially making steady, if slow, progress in their recovery. Sadly, the condition of five of these elephants deteriorated as the days passed and, in consultation with a panel of independent veterinarians and the North West Parks and Tourism Board, the decision was taken on individual animals to euthanase and end their suffering.

While the three surviving elephants are gaining strength and appear to be recovering well from their ordeal, they are being carefully monitored for any deterioration to their condition. It is fervently hoped that they will continue on the road to full recovery and have the opportunity of taking up their lives in the wilderness of the Pilanesberg.

NSPCA staff members, Trendler and Jamieson remain on site at the Pilanesberg with the three young elephants.

The NSPCA wishes to thank the North West Parks and Tourism Board and the Pilanesberg staff for their assistance, co-operation and hands-on involvement with the provision of basic requirements for the elephants and in providing overnight accommodation for NSPCA staff. The moral support afforded to staff members by the Pilanesberg is greatly appreciated.
