I know this is not a very good pic but is it possible for someone to help with identifying which little buck this is?

Where was it taken?
It looks like a Steenbok to me.

If it was taken fairly north, it may be a Sharpes Grysbok.

MM it was seen on our property(NWP about 40kms from Magaliesburg, travelling in the direction of Mafeking) from the house thats why it's a fairly "far-shot". Too tall for Steenbok and seemed too grey in colour. The face looks quite long don't you think and the neck. Had a little one with it. I was thinking maybe Grey Rhebok??? We often see Duiker and Steenbok and I was pretty sure it wasn't either of them at the time. ????

My book on Mammals says, "the large black nose has a somewhat swollen appearance.
It does have an unusual nose.

How big do you think it might have been?

There are so many guest farms, ect in your area, that cannot rule out a little escapee.

I am 90% sure that it is a common duiker

I would also go for a common Duiker!!!!!

The animal doesn't really ring any bells for me, other than a female bushbuck...

I have never seen Rhebuck up close, so that could be a call too! Ears too small, though...

Not a duiker nor a steenbok!

It is a female ... no horns ... which makes the id even more difficult.

I am not optimistic about the Grey Rhebok id either ... the white patch on the neck that I seem to be able to see, does not fit on the GR.

I would hazard a guess and say either a Reedbuck or a Mountain Reedbuck, possibly the latter. Cannot be sure though ... keep on looking!

Did you get any sense of approximate height Rosemary?

Now, height? Mmmm...it is standing among some pretty tall thatching grass and when first spotted it we thought it was one of the Impi's, yet I wouldn't think it quite as tall.

Thanks to all trying to help with this one, really appreciate it. There seems to be a dark marking on the front leg. The pic was taken in March at 10:45am.

Given the "long face", the colour*) and last but not least the location, I'd say Mountain reedbuck?

Def a super nice sighting! I've only seen them a few times in a non-SANParks GR starting with P, NW of J'burg... But they were just too quick and unfortunately I never managed a photo

Thanks for the welcome i thaught that the dark and swollen nose looked a lot like that of a common duiker what size was the buck??

Its a Duiker for sure..A Mountain Reedbuck has a Black nose but has a different stance and profile to a Duiker
