Hi,

Who can id the following small rodent for me. I think it was approx. 20 - 30 cm long. Spotted in Kruger between Skukuza and Satara.

OK, thank you very much. I looked at slit-faced bat in my book and it looks like its possible. Hopefully batmad will check soon, or I will pm him if not.

I also have these bat photos. I don't think its possible to tell what they are from the photos, but if I say they were flying out in large numbers from the bridge over the Letaba River north of the rest camp at sunset, maybe that would help?

Could this be an Oribi :hmz: Spotted on the S128/KNP.

It looks more like a Southern Reedbuck to me - the Oribi has a much larger dark patch under the ear and the ears also look too large for an Oribi, but about the size of a Southern Reedbuck (according to my Identification book anyway)

An oribi has a black tip on its tail. I agree with davejenny, more likely to be a reedbuck. :hmz:

These critters are living in holes in the wall next to Cabin 5 at The Highlands Mountain Retreat. Because of the location, 2200m above sea level I'm thinking Ice Rat? They're way larger than a mouse but more round than a rat.

Yes, it is the Southern Pack-Ice Rat! A truly unique sighting! First of its kind to be ever seen!

Well, at least you have the Rat part correct.

It is either the Angoni Vlei Rat, but more likely the Sloggett's Rat. It is impossible to distinguish them and a few other species, except through dissection and dental structure.

The i.d. is done on distribution and habitat preference.

The Sloggets loves the high mountains, and can be found on the peaks of the Drakensberg.

I saw this rhino about 2 days ago in Kruger, Im think that its a black rhino but just wanted to confirm it.

Just some points about it:
1. It was very very skittish
2. When it ran its tail would go sraight up like a warthog(Dont know if this is a difference between a white and black)
