Cane rats tails are only about a third of their body length.

I would maybe suggest looking at one of the alien invasives such as the norwegian rat if you did not manage to identify it as one of our indigenous species

In fact at a guess I would say there is a good chance that it was our old pal Rattus rattus

Nah, I definitely saw a Greater Cane Rat @ Tamboti, I have spend quite a lot of time with cane rats in Moreletta Kloof in Pretoria as well, sitting amongst what must have been 2 dozen as they came out to forage around me.

The tails are quite thick and perhaps that is what Africat points at as being huge.

Since the update people can't see email addresses anymore under posts. ;)

Keep an eye on your PM's, I'll give you my mail address, and will post the pic here for you tomorrow.

And what size is it?

Saccostomus campestris, or Wangsakmuis in afrikaans looks like a good candidate...

I just noticed that for some reason (I assume an error on my
part) the URL to the Wired Science site did not show up.
Sorry. Daan

Here it is:

Just saw the pic for the first time! Haven't got the English name but that looks like a Kleinrooiskeerbek (in Afrikaans) to me. Latin name - Crocidura hirta.
