Hi all -

No pic I'm afraid, but I need help with something I saw in Magoebaskloof yesterday evening.

Spotted 90 mins after dark on the ground at a lamp post in the camp site, possibly hunting the alates that abounded, was a creamy coloured creature with a very bushy tail. About 50cm high, it walked on all fours and most closely resembled a weasel at first glance, with a pointy face... (Mongoose of some kind?) Nose to end of body was about 50cm and the tail which trailed behind (not curled at all) was 40-50cm in length.

There was no climbing involved and it left after a few moments as quietly and as purposefully as it had arrived.

Hope you can assist. :gflower:

I've never seen one, but could it be a Yellow Mongoose?? Sounds about the right description. Maybe someone else can help.

Thanks for the suggestions so far -

Closest I can find is the White-tailed Mongoose, but the legs were the same colour as the body and not dark.

Yellow is too dark and way too small as I guess the mass of the animal we saw to be 10-15kg at least...

Very vexing :slap:

Hi huntsman

Just a thought - could it have been an albino of some sort? At de Wildt they have/had rescued albino honey badgers - fluffy and creamy/white. I don't know where they originally came from, but, with their colouring (or lack of) they couldn't survive long in the wild.

Otherwise - feral dog or feral cat (I'm not doubting your ability to tell if it's a dog or cat)?

I've been through all my mammal books and I am also stumped. Someone please help!

Good point!

Could well be an albino..

I really wish I'd had the chance of a pic, but it was not there for long and the only light was the lamp in the camp ground. I've 'bushed' for many years and never seen anything like this and I've checked all of my books and there is nothing closer than the two mongooses mentioned.

Definitely not feline or canine - I had a good (though short) view...

The plot thickens!

Either you go back and hope to see it again, or we hope someone will come to the rescue!!

A Civet after a dust bath......... :hmz:

Might be worth asking the manager of the camp site if it's a "local" they should know.

Heh heh!

taller than civet or I might well have considered an albino of that version too...

Spoke to the manager a few moments ago and whilst he's not an animal lover, he knew what I had seen and says they just call it an otter (?)

Is there a very pale otter that would fit that description?

If the otter was wet maybe in the "light of the silvery moon" it might look pale.....

You found a new specie and you don't even know it......

Just returned home and hit my mammal books and it was neither of the two otters, based on colour alone...

Think we'll have to chalk this one up to (in)experience... :?

Hello.
I need help to identify this rabbit. Smith's or Natal??. (I think Natal by the thick tail, but not sure)
The photo is made in the camp of Mountain Zebra.
A greeting and thank you very much to all.
