We spotted Duke on Saturday 5 September, around 17h40 while he was feeding along the S28 - a few kilometres south of Mac's waterhole.

He seemed in good shape and was behaving in a typical calm old bull manner. Although he was moving towards the road, we could not wait for him to come in camera distance - we had to be in Crocodile Bridge by 18h00...

Very happy we saw the big man though!

Good morning,
We also saw Duke on the 27 September 2009 near his waterhole between the S137 and the S28. We were driving back from the waterhole and suddenly he was there. What a feeling...total silence in the car and we knew we were watching a legend! We took beautiful photos, one of them a near shot of his face!

Vriendelike groete

Hope the article in the Star is incorrect. Duke was seen less than a "few months ago" by JoelR on 5th of Sep. and by Spotted Cat on 20th Sep. Just the other day he was sighted this info via Martie's blog.
There is however an "imposter" out there who also has both tusks broken and has caused some confusion, even tripping Aat up, time will tell, I'm hopefull.

I almost got a fright when I saw this guy walk by the other day around Skukuza... thought for a moment it could be Duke, but then I compared the broken tusks between him and Duke...

As far as I can see on the pic below, is this Duke but the pic above is not Duke. He likes a bit older than Duke and the tusks are different.

Hi sheldog, I would say that the pic above is Duke but the other pic isn,t. They are two different Elelphants. The ears are different from the Elephant below and his tusks are smaller. :hmz:

Dear Sheldogz23,
We saw EXACTLY the same elephant at Duke's Water hole during the last week in September 2009 (the teeth and the marks in both ears). I was told in no uncertain terms that it was NOT Duke. I did asked but nobody could tell me who the old guy is! I still remember the wonderfull feeling when he just "appeared: and walked slowly towards us! Thanks for the nice photos.
Warm regards
Vlakvarkvrou.

Hi Sheldogz23,
Interesting comments on your Duke pictures. I commented on the forum. Since i am a bit "slow" when it comes to posting pictures, I can send you my pictures of this Duke if you will please let me know your email adress?
Regards

Hi all,
I see some posts with question if it is Duke or not.
Maybe a help can be to have a look at Duke's broken tusks, the size and how thick they are.
The first two pictures shows Duke with both broken tusks...
Left broken tusk is a bit longer then right one.
Both remaining parts are thick and almost straight forward.

Hope this helps with identifying.
Have a wonderful and healthy 2010.

Just read a report from EJ saying that Duke has been seen on the Muntshe loop and is looking good. :D

Elsa, do you know if he has pictures of Duke?

This is an extract from EJ's report.

Just had an excited Hans (Duke follower) here....they saw Duke today on the Muntshe loop looking really great. He was grazing next to them, and then had a mud bath on the other side of them. They have seen him in the same area at this time of year for the past 3 years! He says they will post photos and maybe video when they can.
