We had the wonderful luck to see Duke for a second time this week -( the first time was Christmas day 2005, just north of Lower Sabie, near Mlondozi ) On Sunday 24th June 2007 at about 10:50 he was about a km from the Croc Bridge camp gate, with two askaris.

This is my contribution to the highlight of all my Kruger sightings, DUKE seen on May 31st this year, on the S28 a little way north of Mac's WH.

There was a new flash on the radio this morning (25 august 2007) that duke has lost one of his tusks. Is this a rumour or is it the truth? What a great loss if he has lost one.I understood that they were going to search for this magnificent tusk.

Hi Ron, Yes, sadly Duke has lost a tusk

We saw him on the 22nd Sept on the S28 Petro.
He was with 2 askaris and looked very relaxed.

In this little video, you see Duke in better day's. We mostly saw him on the S28. :wink:

On Monday 28th January at 12:09 he was busy scratching his back and rump on a tree at the T Junction where the S29 meets the S128. When he had finished scratching he just wandered of straight on towards the river, what we could see, as he dissappeared through the thickish bush and long grass, he was happily munching as he went.

He turned sidewards, but fleetingly, and I am afraid I was not quick enough to get a picture of him like that, and only got a picture of his posterior - anyways the bushes and twigs got in the way of a picture of him, from the side.

We saw Duke on 29th Jan at about 10am at the Mlondozi picnic site (well he was at the dam).

He headed off towards the H10 at the top of the Mlondozi (S29) loop.

We had previously spent two days further south the week before looking for him around Duke's waterhole with no luck so guess if going soon best to try the Mlondozi loop area instead?

He apparently likes to hang about in the maroela veld around mlondozi this time of the year.
He tends to move to the S28 area for most of the winter and spring time.

The tusk first needs to follow the CITES procedure in this regard. We need to weigh it, take measurements etc and fill it into the register here in Skukuza.

I know that Neels van Wyk wanted to clean it too as it is pretty dirty (check out the photograph Lynn - Bucky's SO - posted).

A decision will then be made as to where it will go but everyone seems to be in favour of it going to the Letaba Elephant Hall (its rightful and proper place).

I have no idea when it will eventually find its way to Letaba but some of us here are pushing for it as quickly as possible while the event is still fresh in people's memories.

I can give you an update on this.

The debate to include Duke's tusks are still going on. Even thou Duke is a famous ellie, the other considerations are that Mafunyane, Shawu etc all were also very famous ellies.

Although I mentioned the above, the following considerations are probably more important.

For an elephant's tusks to be included in the Elephant Hall, the elephants tusks have to either be longer or heavier then any of the current tusks in the hall.

Unfortunately at present there Elephant Hall is a full capacity and to include more tusks the Hall would need to be extended.

Hope this clears it up a bit.

What secrecy, red tape and politics???

Dukes tusk is still locked up. He does not qualify for the Elephant Hall which is at full capacity anyway and there is no safe location that is also big enough in the two camps (LS and CB) to house the Tusk.

I can't see the elephant museum being @ such full capacity that it is unable to accommodate half a tusk. But anyways... What's wrong with Skukuza museum then?

If Duke's tusk can't be on display because it's not big or famous enough. Then why is there a tusk and a skull of two unknown elephants in the elephant museum?

The magnificent 7 is a bit before my time, but I feel that Duke is just as well known for his era.

Ok, let me rephrase.

I understand that Duke's tusk might not belong in the Elephant museum for certain reasons. Fair enough.

But if Harry Wolhuter's lion skin, the skin of a man-eater leopard and various other historical items can be on display in Skukuza museum, then why can't Duke's tusk be there as well?
