OK, OK, OK

Thanks to popular demand, let's change it to this. Note change in starting date.

Hyenas look like dogs so please allow me some poetic licence here. Thanks.

Would trippers please post the following sightings per trip ended from 1 May 2007, supported by pics if possible. Let's see who gets the prize first.

The prize: seeing the full house should be prize enough . The first lucky blighter buys a road brick in My Acre of Africa with '6 cats 2 dogs' as a line on it, and places it on the S100. OK!

6 cats
Lion
Leopard
Cheetah
Serval
Caracal
African wild cat

2 dogs
Wild dog
Spotted hyena.

This could serve for regulars as an alternative challenge to the big 5 mania, which one can realistically see before lunch on a good day.

Any objections, no I thought not, now let's go and look for them!

BB, I take it you can't add to a list, but it is how many of the 6 & 2 you see per trip?

My last trip:
6:
Lion
Serval
2:
Wild Dog
Heyna

Correct Gwen. Let's see if anyone can get a full house!
Only 6 & 2 seen on the SAME trip.

In Dec last year I saw lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and wild dog, 3 + 2.

My last trip to KTP (Oct 06)
6: Lion, cheetah, AWC
2: Hyena

My last trip to KNP (Feb 07)
6: Lion, leopard

BB, I agree that this is more difficult than the white rhino version of the Big 5. I saw that on my KNP visit. The black rhino Big 5 is more challenging. Seeing all 8 would be a real jackpot.

Here's a 6 & 2 for KTP

6
Lion
Leopard
Cheetah
Caracal
AWC
Since there are no serval in KTP how about Honey Badger. I know its not a cat, but why give the KTP types an easier challenge.

2
Brown hyena
Spotted hyena

Whatcha think restio? is that fair?

Good one, BB! I think that's very fair.

Another option for KTP is bat-eared fox. Nowadays we seem to see them less often than lion. A pity, because I adore watching them. Ratel is probably better because they are more challenging than bat-eared fox, and I think serval are pretty difficult.

Since I saw both honey badger and brown hyena on my last trip, that would make it:
6: 4
2: 2

You know what restio,

I actually think the KTP challenge is easier than KNP.

On my last KTP trip in September I got 5 & 1.

Lion, leopard, cheetah AWC, HB and brown hyena.

Well folks, all too soon our trip came to an end and this is what we saw:

6 cats:
Lion (21)
Leopard (3)
Cheetah (1)
Serval (1)
Caracal :(
African Wild Cat (1)

2 dogs
Wild dog (3)
Spotted hyena (+-10)

So, on a single trip to Kruger we spotted 5/6 cats and 2/2 dogs, we also saw a Side-Striped Jackal though.....

I can't wait to start the challenge again soon (hopefully), great idea BB!! :D

I agree BB, it puts a different spin on things to look for these animals, one could even include Jackals, like side-striped and black backed. That would give a nice variety of animals to look for. I hope that you do include those, 'cause then I'll have full marks in that category having seen both. :D I don't see jackals all that often any more....

Good idea cptp, I will consider it seriously. It would bolster the 'dog' side, but I am afraid you would have to start again.
Your 7 out of 8 will take a lot to beat. As I said in an earlier post, seeing that bunch is it's own reward and I am sure you agree with me, as a recently returned visitor.

Just been to the Kruger for 28 nights:

4/6 Cats

Lion :D
Leopard :D
Cheetah :D
Caracal :(
Serval :(
African Wild Cat :D

2/2 Dogs

Wild Dog :D
Spotted Hyena :D

See my trip report: 28 Day Diary - Realtime at http://www.sanparks.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=15747

I went to the Kruger in 2001 and saw all but Caracal  , pity the competition only started in May 2007 ... Cptp's trip survives!

Hyena, "a dog"

BB, you are completely barking up the wrong animal! :?

Hyenas are not dogs, there have a completely unique genus and species :? Scientifically speaking they are actually more cat like than dog like. So it should be 7 cats and 1 dog.
