We spotted a Bushbaby in Marloth Park in June and since then my daughter (5) is in love with them.... During our trip in August she bought one of the fluffy animals at the Skukuza shop - and no surprise it was a bushbaby.

She names all her stuffed animals... but this day she was in a foul mood and everytime I asked her what she's going to call the little thing, she would reply "Niks" (meaning she won't call him anything)... and after 2 days of this the name stuck.... and now she won't go to bed without NIKS by her side

Her little brother bought a Leopard and named him "Kallie"... as in Kallie Knoetze...why o why o why?

We have stayed in Skukuza, hut nr 26 and seen a Thick-tailed bushbaby each time. You can always hear them screaming in the distance before they pop in. This first time he creeped down and took an apple our neighbor disposed on the ground. The second, he stared at the lovely roasting chicken on my braai. Needess to say, I watched him with a beady eye until he left.

Yes, interesting indeed.
If I'm not wrong there are some at Letaba.

The correct name you're looking for is: Thick-tailed Bushbaby / Greater Bushbaby
I've seen them all over the park, especially in camps next to rivers, Letaba, Skukuza, LS, etc. They make the most terrible sound you've ever heard in your life!! It's eery!!

Would have loved to see them when we were there. I was looking on the net for a sound bite when I found that little guy....did hear a very strange cry at night at Skukuza... wonder if it was a bushbaby

We found these guys in August 2009 and August 2010 at Skukuza. I'm not sure if they are the type that you are looking for, but these photos were taken in the same tree a year apart????





All that I can say is that they are one of the most difficult animals that I have ever tried to photograph.

I have seen them in 3 different camps:

- Punda Maria in a tree near the safari tents
- Letaba in a tree near the D circle
- Satara under the roof between the reception and the shop (this was only 3 weeks ago)

We have always found them when the sausage trees are in flower - no flowers no bush babies

Bushcraft, you're right! I ran around for ages and got no where near being able to take any kind of picture of one!!!!

We have a lot of thick tails up north, you will be able to find them in any northern camp

I have a family of 6 living in a large nyala-tree in my garden It's great if you braai on a friday evening and the bushbabies sit only 2 meters away watching you!

Heard and saw lots of thick-tailed bushbabies in Skukuza during the last few days.
Was one foraging on the ground at the shop 15mins after closing time and 2 on th toilet roof nearby foragng for insects on the thatch.
There haunting calls at nigh are great!

Put the time in at first dark and I think you will be rewarded with seeing this normally elusive animal!

When we stayed at skukuza we had a thick- tailed bushbaby outside our hut in a tree fir the whole time we were there.
