I saw these 2 in the tamboti area in march last year. The area just before you get to the tamboti/maroela turnoff .

What happened to all the BBJ's??
We would see 15-20 a trip in the 90's, now its 2 or 3. Find SSJ much more common these days than before including can you believe it a group of 7 N of Satara running in the road.
2 theories for their decline:
1 Heard about some disease or something that burrowing animals were getting -dont know the details at all or if its true.
2 Heard about localized bush encroachment - perhaps being wiped out by larger predators (have a pic of a leopards SSJ in a tree!)

Furtherst N seen a BBJ in recent times was under the powerlines on H1-8 in Dec 06.

I would agree Black-backed are rarer in prime predator country, although as posted previously more common elsewhere!

Just my experience, though...who knows!

(Haven't see SSJ for a decade...)

I also agree about the numbers of these animals. I rarley see them and sometimes i go home froma trip to Kruger without seeing one. If i am lucky i will see one at a kill but that isnt often.

I am very curious about the numbers :hmz: :hmz:

Maybe someone can find out for us?

Nice, Yolandè!

Orpen area has always been virtually guaranteed to provide jackals, (20 years or so)

Now that Batmad mentions it, have been to a few relatively new kills over the past year and not seen jackals... :hmz:

Saw one at Lugmagdam early this year.

On our recent trip I was also remarking on how few BBJ's we had seen over the past year or so and then guess what........
on our trip from Olifants camp to Phalaborwa Gate we saw 7 in the space of a few hours. :D

We saw this Jackal today just before gate closing time, on the H10 from Tshokwane to Lower SAbie. He ran next to our car for 2 km, eating grasshoppers and other roadkill, and drinking water from the car's aircon dripping... Our 4th BBJ in 8 days.
