Nice, Yolandè!

Orpen area has always been virtually guaranteed to provide jackals, (20 years or so)

Now that Batmad mentions it, have been to a few relatively new kills over the past year and not seen jackals... :hmz:

Saw one at Lugmagdam early this year.

We saw this Jackal today just before gate closing time, on the H10 from Tshokwane to Lower SAbie. He ran next to our car for 2 km, eating grasshoppers and other roadkill, and drinking water from the car's aircon dripping... Our 4th BBJ in 8 days.

Thanks everyone!
You'll not believe me.... :D Today I did a specific "hunt" for Shelleys Francolins and Afr finfoot, but first after leaving the camp, found 4 lions, and about 2km further these two Jackals. Thats a total of 8 in 2 weeks.

Saw this fella munching on a 2 week old ele carcass on the river loop south of the H9 on the west of Letaba. Was probably the longest sighting we have had of a BBJ - just kept on munching until a moron in a large camper van screamed up and skidded to a halt spooking the jackal.

Image

We saw another two hanging around a hyena pack who were demolishing a carcass just outside Satara but did not get a pic unfortunately.

Nice Pics everyone...
RP I agree and from sightings it seem that they are on the up again. As we know just about all the mammals seem to go through fluctuations and based on observations from forumites it seems to be the case.
To get back to a previous comment from Batmad about why they declined...2 theories I heard that I may have already mentioned.
1) Increased predation...perhaps the wetter years have resulted in thicker bush increasing their chances of being preyed apon. KTP has huge numbers perhaps open habitat is better suited.
2) I heard of some disease that has been wiping out species that live in burrows like Jackals and Warthogs...never found the source again and have subsequently seen nothing more on this..wonder if it was a myth or is true! Who knows... 8)

Interesting, o-dog, and good comments!

Don't think a "disease" could seriously affect animals as widely different as dogs and pigs, rather parasites or bacteria...you never know! :hmz:

Have you ever ducked your head into one of those used burrows in a termite heap?!

They are filthy!

Haha I have before and as filthy as they are, I always enjoy the anticipation of what might be hiding inside
Agree it does seem crazy that dogs and pigs can be affected by one virus, so its probably why I have never found the resource again! But you have to say warthog numbers were on the down for the last few years compared to the increasing numbers now,, and so it coincided with the jackals possible decline somewhat. Maybe just coincidence. Anyway its interesting!
