Not SANPARKS, but possibly Zim...

Shows you how fast and aggressive they can be!

Wonder what the outcome was!

Saw this hippo fight on 6 June 08 at the Ntandanyathi hide. At one stage 3 hippos were attacking this poor fellow. Really felt sorry for him. I suppose this is hippo life! Must say this was one of the highlights of our trip. You dont often see them fight.

This hippo was also seen at the Ntandanyathi Hide. Very unusal sight and just a very lucky shot.

Have a look at this photo on ODP to see a good example of the teeth and jaws of this animal and why they can be so dangerous

Very nice example Cois.

One can also see that those ivory blades are sharpened as they slide up and down the upper teeth.

As I've mentioned before. Hippos have been seen biting a crocodiles in half.

I can't imagine biting anything tougher than a croc in half.

I am actually not surprised to read that, as we were there quite a bit in the 2 weeks just prior to that and could see tensions building up and lots of aggression being shown, dung showering, yawning etc.
I think there are really too many Hippos there now after the breaching of the Nhlangzwane Dam. :?

Has anyone seen the recent program on NatGeo Wild on Hippos?
It was about this man and his colleague who were taking tourists out in canoes on the river, hippo sighting. They came upon the mother and her calf, which went into another direction quickly.
They thought it was now safe to pass the hippos.
For some reason ( I cant remember) this one guide fell into the water.
The other reached into the water to help him out, when the huge bull came up from underneath.
The man went into the hippo's mouth up to his waist/lower back.
Hippo took him into the water.
The man is alive and telling the story.
He suspects that the sound of the paddle on the water irritated the hippo ( which can hear both above and beneath the water)
Unfortunately, they did not tell us the injuries this man received or if perhaps he is now in a wheelchair( they just kept showing his face and upper body)
Talk about an experience.
Also last year, saw people on the Lower Sabie bridge, getting out of the car ( seen from LS's deck)
WE quickly went there to see.
Were very fortunate to get a spot right above and next to the action.
A huge croc caught a baby hippo and struggled for a long time to actually swallow the hippo.
It was alive for quite some time.
Every time the croc threw hippo in air to swallow, the fish ( I suppose barbers) pulled it back, but eventually the croc succeeded.
