I did the Metsi in June and thought the camp was quite ok. You'll enjoy it! I was told by the trail ranger that the new Metsi camp would be operational by January 2014.

Hi all of you,

I received an alarming letter yesterday about the temporary closure of the trail base camp of the Metsi Metsi wilderness trail, because the base camp is 'in a very poor condition'. They move to a temporary fly camp for bookings from 15 september. I booked the Metsi Metsi for the 11th of september, so I will be the last one to stay in the old camp......

I'm really worried about what we can expect in a camp in 'a very poor condition'....... Is there anyone who did the trail recently and can tell something more about it? Does the poor conditions have something to do with the sanitary of with the A-frame huts or both?....

They offer you the possibility to cancel the trail. That doesn't sound as a solution. Booked this trail months ago, and now you can't change your plans anymore....

I hope there's somebody on the forum who knows more about it, thank you.

Dear Inri

It is indeed true that the Metsi Metsi Trail will be temporarily closed as from 15 September 2013 due to renovations taking place at the camp. The camp at the moment is not badly damaged but we cannot wait for the conditions to deteriorate before doing something, hence we decided to close it temporarily. We are busy establishing a temporary fly camp near Nkuhlu to accommodate Metsi Metsi Trail until the renovations are completed.

Metsi-Metsi was terrific! Really enjoyed the atmosphere of the camp, the other guests were nice too. EJ and Phillip are really outstanding guides!
We saw a lot of game while on foot... We never walked a long time without seeing anything which is quite unusual for a walk!

We even saw 2 Lions (1 male and 1 female)! Not that close of course
Phillip said he saw a 3rd lioness but I only saw 2...

The other day we came across 2 Honey Badgers who ignored us for a long time and let us walk quite close towards them! One looked at us, sniffing and then they trotted away... Awesome!

Phillip also saw a Leopard but it quickly disappeared without anyone else seeing it. Only Eagle-Eye Phillip - really amazing that guy!

Seeing Elephant and Rhino on foot was also great of course. But all of us really enjoyed walking in this scenic area and just loved being in the middle of the african bush! Between all the game we saw, of course we also had time to look at the little things that are out there...

On our last morning, we spotted a Leopard from the hide! Wasn`t that far away from the little camp fence... :D
The guides couldn`t believe it!

Thanks again to EJ, Phillip and Ernesto for the whole experience!
Greetings, Jochen

I did the Nwatimwambu trail camp (the Metsi Metsi replacement) in November. I really can NOT recommend it. The bush is too thick for walking, it is NOTHING like the Metsi Metsi area. It can be dangerous to walk up on animals in bush that thick, and not everyone in the group will even see the few animals encountered.

While Andre and Ronnie tried very hard to make up for this, I would switch to another trail if possible, Sweni was much better.

The tents were nice, although the chemical toilets need to be serviced by the park between each set of guests, the rangers should not have to do this.

Hi,

I tried to book a Wilderness trail (Nyalaland or n'Watin'Wambu), I found some E-mail addresses who to write to about Wilderness Trails but all Emails that I wrote remain unanswered. I also used an oline form and entered my request but still no answer. Could somebody please tell me how to book a Wilderness trail?
Do I have to make a booking in a restcamp where the trails start, too? Or is it independant, that I can just arrive at the camp when the trail starts? I would like to have a confirmed booking of a wilderness trail before booking a camp, because I absolutely want to go on a trail. The place is secondary for me.

Thank you,

Martin
