I'm certainly not an expert, as I've only been to Kruger once in Oct. '09, but our night drive at Satara was so amazing. I just have to share it!
It was kinda quiet at first, but then someone spotted male lions feeding on a giraffe just in the tree line. The lionesses were slowly edging their way in. We just sat quietly and watched.
All of a sudden, the lionesses got brave and charged in, and a fight and chase worthy of National Geographic erupted. About 15 lions ran straight toward the vehicle, and some of them decided to turn and fight again right behind the truck! Talk about a cat fight! WOW!
They would run, then fight again; the lionesses finally gave up and ran off, and we watched the males prance back across the road in all their proud glory, back to the kill.
It was such an incredible sight, all of us in the vehicle were speechless. I think guide was too, or either he let us just sit there for a little bit, while we processed what we'd just had the privilege of witnessing!
The remainder of the drive was also productive! Saw an aardvark, African wild cat, genet, hyena, porcupine, hippos in the woods, etc!
After that, we went on a morning, sunset, or night drive everyday the remainder of our trip! All were well worth the time and $$, although we didn't see a major cat fight again.
Can't wait til our next trip in Nov. 2013! Jay Bird
