Hi John T

Have a read here for some links. If you still have questions, I can try and ask Jerry, our guide when we did the trail, to help you out.

I am really wanting to do the Lebombo Eco trail next year. I am shortly going to have to replace my vehicle, and am looking at the Amarok, but the auto version only due out in a few months time. I recently just found out though that VW has decided to put an eight speed gearbox in this vehicle, and since the first two gear ratios are very low already, there will be no option of a low range transfer case.

Do you have to have a vehicle equipped with low range to do this trail, or do you think the eight speed auto will be ok?

As far as I have read low range is seldom required unles there has been unseasonable heavy rain - the trail does not operate in the rainy season.
Low range is not a pre requisite.

Hi AndrewGericke, the auto Amarok will be fine to do the trail. The new auto gearbox has been designed in such a way that the low first and second ratios, combined with intelligent management of the torque converter on the gearbox, will allow you to have the same effective ratios and control as the manual gearbox with a lowrange gearbox.

The Lebombo route is not overly taxing or technical. It is a echo route, thus you wont drive serious 4x4 obstacles.
The Amarok will make light work of this route.

Lebombo eco 4x4 trail feed back
:P :P
What a awesome trip, if you have the time to do it you must
Only once you have done it you will notice how diverse this park is, driving through all the different biomes is amazing, camping in the Kruger with no fences is scary but awesome, hearing the lions down the road, hippos walking through the camp, hyenas and jackals calling all night, waking up in the middle of the night to go to the loo, you need to have a good look if there is anything lurking around, one thing doing this is to see the stars, it is amazing to see how many there are.
This is not a trip to see lots of game, but we did see the big 5, you travel long distances and just get to camp when the sun is setting, make sure you have off road tires cause we had two blowouts and have to be recovered by the park and spent the second night in Sukuza, went on the night drive that night and saw my first otter on the drive.

All in all fun was had by all
